The friendliness of the people. also the free and easy lifestyle. Smoking hash in Vondel park. Going to the Heineken Brewery every day for breakfast. The Milkweg, Paridiso and other smoking bars throughout the city. Great food. A red light district that is right out of a comedy routine. Really pretty girls all over town with that Scandinavian thing going for them. Good music with amazing concerts where you can get an Ice cold beer delivered to your seat still in the bottle. Beautiful canals with charming boats of many colors. and much much more!

It is the most carefree city in Europe (I don't need to go into detail as other posters have already spoken of the "coffee houses," Red-light district, etc.) - plus the vast network of canals, the bike-friendly streets, and exceptional architecture make Amsterdam truly unique - you won't find any other place quite like it anywhere on the continent.
The museums are also fantastic and really do a good job showcasing Dutch Art across the centuries.
But I think what really made my experience in Amsterdam such a good one was the diversity, warmth and friendliness of the Dutch people.

I work in Amsterdam - so the fact that going there gets me paid i like the most :D

I often go to Amsterdam, it is only 30 minutes by train.
I like the different museums:

Just walking in town, along the canals or in the shopping streets is fun.
It is great for eating out, many different restaurants.

Beautiful city, built on canals, the architecture, the Van Gogh museum, the coffee houses and bars, the easy pot scene (even though I don't partake), and the Anne Frank house were all highlights for me. Just get there and walk around, it's very cool.

The Anne Frank house was very impressive. Plus the whole city is just beautiful to walk or cycle through and explore.
