Antonio Gates is a very good player in the NFL who didn't play at all in college (I have no idea if he played in HS). But he got noticed as a college basketball player with good athletic ability and a big body.

I wouldn't tell your friend to throw in the towel just yet. The truth of the matter is that there are probably people like your friend who have more raw talent than some current Pros. The problem is that playing football at that level not only requires physical ability but an in depth knowledge of the game that can only be learned by being immersed in football at a high level. The best route for your friend would be to play on a Semi-Pro team (When I played, we would occasionally have scouts on hand) This might open the door to the next level, I.E. Arena Football which in theory could open more doors, assuming he is as good as he thinks he is.

It happens every couple years when they bring in a kicker from European Soccer.
Also, there have been several wide receivers such as Willie Gault and Renaldo Nehemiah who played at the NFL level despite never playing before. But of course they had world record speed.
Another possibility I see happening would be bringing in a Sumo Grand Champion to be a nose tacklle.
As for your friend, he needs to find a way to get the tryout. He could try moving up through semi-pro and arena leagues until he catches the eye of an NFL scout.

It's almost impossible. The NFL scouts players from the ranks of college football because they want to see how players compete on a semi-professional level. High school football is not a good indication of a player's abilities. If your friend hasn't even played high school football, the NFL would have no way to gauging his abilities against other players, or quite frankly even find out who he is.

Joe Horn got into the NFL with 3 bucks and a Jerry Rice video.
But then again he played some college/HS football.
Like the guy above me said, if your friend has a vast knowledge of textbook football and has some amazing physical abilities then he should make a highlight video or something and send it in and he might get a chance of being signed.

There was a fella by the name of Micheal Lewis in New Orleans, was driving a Budwieser truck, he tried out for the Eagles and was cut in the final cut, went to Arena fb did well, got a try out with the Saints and made the team, performed outstandingly as a punt and kick off returner. He also did well when given an oppertunity as a WR. He was cut this year after spending most of last year on IR, its possible, but one has to be super fast or super bad azz and probabaly a little of both!

You'd have to a suprior athlete to say the very least and you have to have connections to one of the franchises to let you try out. All undrafted free agents have to be invited to training camp or to a teams practice during the year. I actually remember a running back for the broncos about 4 or 5 years ago who was in the military and he didn't play college or high school ball.....but he still managed to play pro

Almost certainly not.
Theoretically, yes. But you'd have to be a superb athlete in incredible physical condition, probably having played another contact sport at a very high (college or better) level. Like say a rugby player trying to make the conversion.

Wasn't the movie "Invincible" starring Mark Wahlberg based on a true story?
Personally, if your friend nevered played organized ball in hs or college, he's got to be one bad mamba jamba with amazing skills to even have a chance at being looked at.

Well, they do hold open tryouts...but get real...the Joe Blows off the street don't become NFL stars...You have to do something in college that the coaches think is pretty good...Then they keep an eye on you...
