Oh you have to read the book "five people you meet in heaven." it is absolutely excellent. about a man who is an accident and these people/spirits he meets on his journey. It sort of explains why people come into our lives even if only for seconds and how we affect others lives without even knowing it.

At the moment I am reading the 5th book of the series "The Ladies n.1 Detective" by A. McCall Smith. I definitely recommend it!
Other books I read in the past years and loved:
"The Kite Runner" by Khaled Hosseini
"Slaughterhouse Five" by Kurt Vonnegut
"The time traveler's wife" by Audrey Niffenegger

I'm reading 3 books currently. The first one is a Fantasy book called Mists of Avalon. It's about Arthurian legends, but focuses on the sister of King Arthur- Morgaine. It's a long read though.
The second one is called Working on The Edge by Spike Walker. It's about crab fishing on the Bering Sea. It's a non fiction book and is a great read for fans of the Discovery Channel reality show- Deadliest Catch.
The third is called Here They Come by Yannick Murphy. I picked this one up because of all the acclaim it's received. Here's a brief review 'Splitting time between a garbage-strewn apartment and an overly affectionate hot dog vendor, the observant thirteen-year-old who stands steadily at the center of Here They Come gives lyrical voice to an unforgettable instant—1970s New York, stifling, violent, and full of life. Balanced between her enigmatic siblings, borderline parents, and a quiet sense of the surreal, she recounts a year of vivid, mundane moments with dark humor and deadpan resilience. By Yannick Murphy, author of the New York Times Notable Book Sea of Trees."

" THE AWAKENING and selected Short Fiction" by Kate Chopin. When it first appeared in 1899, Kate Chopin's The Awakening was greeted with cries of outrage. Its frank portrayal of a woman's emotional , intellectual, and sexual awakening shocked the sensibilities of the time and destroyed (almost) the author's reputation and career. And "NAKED"- Black Women Bare All About Their Skin, Hair, Hips,Lips, and Other Parts". Edited by Ayana Byrd and Akiba Solomon. Includes contributions from such notables as: Iyanla Vanzant, Tracee Ellis Ross, Jill Scott, Jill Nelson Kelis, asha bandele, Melyssa Ford and Hilda Hutcherson. Candid, witty, and insightful, "NAKED" is a provocative collection of essays that captures what today's African-American women think about their bodies- from head to toe. Both books are very good reads, I'm almost finish with "Naked".

What do you like to read? I suggest
"Beauty" by Sherri S. Tepper
"Mists of Avalon" and "Firebrand" by Mariam Zimmer Bradley.
The entire 'Incarnations of Immortality" by Piers Anthony
The "Fire and Ice" series by George RR Martin.
I am an obsessive book worm. These books really captured my attention.
Edit: They are all fantasy novels- Beauty is an insane play on childrens fairy tales including a twisted version of Cinderella.
Mists is the King Arthur story from the viewpoint of Morgan Le Fey. Firebrand is Kassandra in Troy during the trojan war.
Incarnations are about death, time, fate, war, mother nature, satan and god.
Fire and Ice- fantasy set in a crazy feudal society where you empathize with all the characters. Main characters die. Engrossing.

Try reading the English version of the Jewel in the palace. It is based on a true legendary story about a low status palace maid who become the first royal physician in Korean history. In addition, many people perished and many lives saved. She was even at the disposal of the king. She went all out to make new and breaking discoveries to find a cure to cure the sick.
Then the new appointed top lady was all out to kill her. ...... ....
