the following article was posted to me by mail:

Sudarshan Reddy has theoretically proven the existence of a sub-atomic particle, which can travel at speed greater than that of light, thereby challenging one of the fundamental postulates of the "Theory of Relativity".

In his recent research paper submitted to the Institute of Advanced Physics (IAP) at Trieste ( Italy ), Sudarshan has proved the existence of a class of sub-atomic particles called "leptons",which can travel faster than light.

do u guys believe this is true? i dont know much about leptons and stuff, is it possible?

The Truth:
This email is being widely circulated on websites and chat rooms in India. TruthOrFiction.com has found no evidence of this individual, his brother, or his discovery. No article has appeared in the India Times. There is no Carl Uppsala associated with the Nobel Prizes (he is named in the email). There is not a Dr. Massimo Martelli (also named in the email) who is president of "The International Physics Community." Most of all, there is no such thing as an "IQ meter."

This is getting infuriating. They found one result that seemingly violates the general tenet that nothing could go faster than the speed of light. This result runs against millions of previous results that all confirmed it, so what scientists say is "That is interesting. Can anyone explain our result, or find where our experiment may have caused an error?" Notice the article that you linked is entitled "Pillar of physics _challenged_" (emphasis mine; 'challenged' does not mean 'proved wrong'). The world is divided in two groups of people (not equally numerous): those who understand a bit of science and take any announcement with a healthy dose of wonderment, skepticism, rationality, and avoid jumping to conclusion; and those who display a most blatant lack of restraint and usually are all over the place showing how ignorant and generally stupid they probably are. Care to guess which group you belong to?

Leptons are sub atomic particles, they don't travel in excess of light speed.

Untrue. (Leptons are everyday particles like electrons and neutrinos)
