My external Maxtor 3100 hard drive (100 gb). My computer does not recognize the hardware by assiging a product number like a b c d e f "g". I have restarted my computer, plugged and unplugged the device with no success. I have an IOMEGA with no problem. The Device Manager Disk drives recognize " Maxtor 6L100PO USB Device, the internal Drive(C and D), the IOMEGA d.rive (F) and CD/DVD (E). Any assistance is appreciated. Thanks.....

Try attaching it to the rear USB port and with all other USB ports empty. It might just be USB port conflict.

If this does not work, try it in another computer. If still it does not work, return it for warranty. If there is no more warranty, take out the HDD from the case and plug it as slave drive in the PC. If it works, external drive case connections could be defective. If it can not even be detected by BIOS, HDD is dead.

Did I understood corectly? u have an hard drive on USB? well, that's a bit problematic, USB devices are advanced but the results are not always satiesfied. And the USB hard drive devices supports only a limited numbers of partitions ( i had a mobile-rack on usb in the same way). My recomendation, buy yourself an IDE interface hard-disk. Good Luck!
