First, made sure they are upgraded. Second, make sure that no two (or more) media programs are set to read the same type of file. If Real Player and Windows Media Player are both set to automatically read MP4 files, it won't work. You need to go to prefrences in one of the programs and turn that option off so only one program is set to view MP4 files. That goes with music files too.

You probably need codecs to play your music or videos. You can download codec packs, or just the files types you need. You could download VLC player which has many codecs built in.
