If you want to keep your icons but get rid of the arrows on the icons, go to this website and download the program FreshUI, http://www.freshdevices.com/freshui.html, when on it go to the Windows Interface click the plus sign and a list of options come up, go directly to Shortcuts, click it and then Shortcut Arrow will appear, click that and on the right hand side you will see 3 options click the option that says "Show arrows on shortcuts (*ink) when its clicked a box will open wit a box and all 3 should be check, click on the checks so the check can disappear once done exit the program and the program will now prompt you to restart your computer. Once your computer has been restarted the arrows will be gone from your desktop.

The arrow indicates that the icon is a shortcut to a particular program, so if you don't want it you delete the shortcut itself. However if you want to delete because you've got so many of them cluttering up the desktop, why not put them all in one folder marked programs. That's what I do, so they're still easy to get to instead of having to go Start, All Programs and find because as an IT Tutor I have so many programs installed.

as already stated, it means they are short cuts. you can re install the programs on your desktop. the arrow will go away, but if you install a bunch of things on the desktop, it is saved in your user profile. this will cause it to take longer to load your profile. although the arrow may not look as nice, its actually better that way. the only other option is to delete it., but then you have to hunt through the start menu. its up to you, but i would leave it as is.
