So.. I plan to attend UT in the fall of 2008(I know I will be accepted due to Texas' TOP 10 Percent Law). My question is should I stay on campus or off-campus? Also if I was to stay off-campus how far in advanced should I start looking for apartments and looking at getting a lease signed?

I would appreciate only serious answers.. not "two points" , etc. Also UT alumni might help, but would appreciate answers from anyone that has had to make this decision..

First best answer gets the ten pts.

UT does not require freshmen to live on campus due to the large amount of incoming students and the lack of housing.

If you are beginning as a freshman (which I assume you are, if you are going as part of the 10% law), then definitely you should stay on-campus. Since you mention looking for an apartment, your family clearly does not live in Austin, and usually the only reason schools let freshmen live off campus is if they live with their families. Moving off campus involves a lot of hassles you probably don't want to deal with while getting used to being in college - annoying landlords, roommates who stick you with the rent, etc. If you were a junior transferring to UT Austin I could see living off campus, but for now, stay on campus and be fully part of the campus life for a while.

My daughter graduated from Harding Univ. in AR last May, but as you, considered going to UT. To help her decide, we visited the UT campus, and took a tour of all the freshman class buildings, and dorms.

I suggest that you do this as well, if you have not already done so.

After our tour, and being bombarded with smokers everywhere we went, and seeing the street that ran alongside the west side of the campus filled with the tatoo parlors and liquor stores and the homeless people making their way on campus for the nite as the sun started setting, she made the choice to go to Harding instead.

If UT is your ultimate choice, and you feel that is where you need to be (it is a good school, and I know a lot of really good people who went there) and to answer your dorm question: Please stay in the dorm at LEAST for your first year. It may be required, but if you have the choice, it is an experience as important as the classes you will take. Dont miss it. :)

Good luck to you. May God lead you in your choice.

If you will be a freshman, live on campus. So much more to do, people to meet and it's get you acclimated to campus live. Your second year move off campus. If you know you want to live off campus find housing asap. The good apartments go fast. Especially the ones closest to campus.
