Hey,
I'm a student at UCSD. I went to Calcopy to purchase my book for my Phil 163 class yesterday and the owner of the store switched my $20 bill, and gave it back to me claiming that it was a fake. The money that I used to pay with, I had just taken from the ATM, and the $20 that he gave me, claiming was mine, was old, and folded up, and wrinkled. It clearly wasn't mine, but when I insisted that it wasn't, he kicked me out of the store. I kept arguining with him, and he eventually gave me $40 back, and the $20 fake, which still leaves me down $15, and I have no book. He is a crook, and you should never deal with him if at all possible. If you have to, then use a debit card. I am going to tell my teacher, Mr. Doppelt about this, tell everyone that you know too. I also called that Turko guy.
Thanks.

If anyone has an idea of what I can do, let me know. I called the police, they told me that it was not a police matter, and referred me to the Secret Service, who were closed at 4:30. This is also the only place that it is possible to purchase the book, and I have an essay due on wednesday.

This guy is the owner of the store. And the reason why the book is available at Calcopy is because it is out of print. It is impossible to get the book anywhere else. Also, I didn't add this in the first part, but the total cost of the books was $55. So when he gave me the $40 it still leaves me $15 short.
thanks for answering.

I think you out $15.00, try not to deal with that store again, you know the fake $20.00 didn't come from the ATM. The secret service will not help I think, you'll get as much from then as you got from the police. Just use the debit card in the further. You have to be careful with the debit card also,if this guy is shady you don't want him with your debit number that's for sure, that may leave you wost off than you are now. Try finding a store you can trust.

Unless you want to to continue to track down secret service you might just want to continue to put this crook on blast all over the Internet. Tell your professor (and maybe suggest she use a different store in the future that won't rip her students off), and have a friend or someone else go in and buy the book for you. You might also consider reporting Calcopy to the Better Business Bureau.

But I am sorry to say that it sounds like that crook has gotten away with your 15 bucks!

Money is a really hard issue unless you know each serial number that's on the bills you give people.

You could call your local news stations and tell them your story. No one likes to hear about people being ripped off. With any luck the news station will show up at this guys store, and try to have some words with him lol

Wow. Tell your professor about it and maybe he can give you extra time to get your report done.

Have you looked for the book online? Ebay? Amazon?

That is just not right what he did to you. Maybe he didn't like the looks of you for some weird reason. Try sending a friend into the store to buy the book for you. Good luck.

If the police don't think that it is their problem, then what is their job? What do they do then. If you had been passing "funny money'
they would have been all over you like Brer Rabbit on Tar Baby. I am
so sorry you had to go through this. I hope that a lot of people will
boycott his store; might make him think twice about messing with
University students, or anyone else. : }

Let me get this straight; you gave him $20. After arguing about the fake bill, he gave you $40 back and the $20 fake? Wouldn't that leave you $20 ahead?

Anyhow, try to see if you can find it on eBay and Overstock.com. Unfortunately, I doubt there's anything you can do, unless several other people have complained about the store. If several people complain about the store, it might get enough attention for them to actually do something about it.

The FIRST person who answered had the results....heck...call the FBI !!!!! NOT the BBB....y uneed someone to take you REALLY seriously....they can view the tapes at the bank..and then check ALL of their money to see how much is fake...including the person's who disallowed youto get your book...how dare they...if I were there i would GIVE you the money and I barely have it to spare!

That guy clearly robbed you. Wait until it's late and no ones on the block then throw a brick through his windows. You won't get your original $20 but it will make you feel better.
