Some people have put a picture of the person in a chair and then addressed everything they would have said or never got to say to the picture. It can feel weird when you start (sort of like talking to the TV) but once you start, the thoughts and emotions just come and you can let out everything without restraint (provided your kids and hubby aren't watching the event). It can really help bring about some resolution. Honest.

In this case, although it may not be wholly satisfying, a person must resort to contemplation of the relationship within which a catharsis of personal thoughts and feelings about the relationship can occur. Sentiments of regret, forgiveness, compassion, and gratitude need to be generated at some point in this process that can be "sent out" to the memory of the other person. Some kind of token ritual of atonement might need to be devised, as suggested by another responder here. Or one might have to find a surrogate of the lost person to reestablish a kind of bond.

The exercises may have to be repeated but, in the end (in the absence of the other person) you will be trying to heal something inside yourself related to the relationship rather than the relationship itself.

This is a hard one. I had to get over a lot of stuff with my mom after she died. I was hurting because she never said that she loved me, and now she was gone. What I did was: I found a basket and painted it. Then I put things in it that made me feel batter like a poem I wrote. Then sent it on to her by taking it to the woods and sending love with it to her. I left it there and never looked back.

Basically you are asking how to bring peace to yourself. There is no easy answer for this. I can only speak from my experience, and that is to simply let go. Not that that is easy, but it is necessary. You have to just keep moving on.

When you figure it out let me know. I'm sure many will say get over whatever it is, or mark it up as a learning experience. Time will heal. YadaYadaYada. I've been trying for 3 years, I really don't think its possible. If they are dead, go piss on their grave everyday. If they are living shoot them then go piss on their grave everyday. ;-)
