I have seen answers to questions pertaining to personal responsibility here that include this idea that sex is a basic human need, and many times on talk shows when people are fighting over who the baby's daddy is, the first person to suggest abstinece as a form of birth control is torn a new butt crack over the idea.
I thought the three basic human needs were food, clothing and shelter. What is it about sex that makes it the fourth human necessity, to the point that people have it without thinking about the end result, either a baby or a desease?
And why is it that when those people are facing the music because of their choice, they pull out this "sex is a basic human need" excuse? I'd really like to know what people think about this.

I should clarify - I'm not talking about sex between people who intend to perpetuate the species. I'm talking about people who have careless sex at will, then in order to refuse to take responsibility for the result, hide behind this "sex is a basic human need" thing.

And by the way, there's nothing religious about me. I haven't set foot in a church in about 20 years.

I think it's because humans are far more likely to have sex than to not have sex. Procreation--the need to have children--is necessary for the race, but for the individual?
I think it's by no means necessary for everyone, and I'm a little annoyed that so many people clearly believe it is. I often hear from old married friends who haven't had sex for months, or over a year, simply because they've "moved past" that part of their relationship. Everyone will reach a point in their lives when sex just isn't that likely, due to old age or an absent spouse. Most cultures have got subgroups of people--priests, nuns, vestal virgins--who abstain from sex without dying from that abstinance. Therefore, while sex is a basic human DRIVE, it's not a basic human NECESSITY.

It is pretty much a need. You're blending people being irresponsible with sex being a human need. People just humping and having kids is stupid, but there has been plenty research that shows that sex works wonders for peoples mental health. From the release of hormones that bring about a sense of euphoria, to basic happiness of feeling wanted and desired. Sex is beneficial. You really are blurring the line between responsible sexual acts and immature ones. Just because you're not having sex for procreation doesn't mean you're not thinking about the possible outcomes. When I hear that, I think more of people having unprotected sex and / or having multiple partners. We do have a natural desire to have sex. As we mature physically our bodies begin craving sexual satisfaction. Our ability to control these urges is one thing that separates us from animals, but it's not necessarily a good idea to suppress them always. Many people criticize churches for requiring vows of celibacy. God doesn't ask for that. That is something man came up with that they felt would place them in a greater light with God. God never said, "go forth and populate the Earth, unless you want to show me how devoted you are." I'm all for abstinence for teenagers and those unsure about sex. But for mature adults, go for it and be safe.

It is a necessity keep us sane in an insane world.
Its a good stress reliever. As long as its safe, its something very good. Also makes you look young, for example I'm 43 and I look 25. Whoever says NO is not happy with their sexuality, most likely have a small penis or in case of women no guys has done her the right way.

The primal part of our mind cannot distinguish between sex for pleasure and sex for procreation. Therefore, we want to have sex because we are needing to keep the species going.
Despite how "civilized" we are, our true core is quite animalistic.

You might call it a basic human need if only because the human race would quickly become extinct without it.

It isn't really a necessity, it's just that everybody wants to do it, so society has decided it is a basic human need.

Sex is fun and healthy exercise. It's cheap, gives you lots of pleasure, and helps you create a certain bond to the human being.
Sex is good, if not good, it can't be bad.
