I think that all he meant is that not only did Christianity conquer Rome but Rome conquered Christianity. In order for the Christian religion to be victorious it had to change. It was a two way street. For instance Saturday was the sabbath but the Church fathers changed it to Sunday because it was already a pagan holiday. And St. Paul did away with the dietary rules and circumcision. The church wanted converts so they made it as easy as possible to become Christian. So Christianity had to change. I hope that this has been a help to you.

Under Emperor Constantine, the Roman Empire's official religion became Christianity. But it was a hard sell; many of the Old Testament demands of Christianity wasn't palatable to many Romans. After all, Romans loved to shave their beards, eat pork, work on the Sabbath, and definitely weren't lining up to be circumcised (at this time without anesthetic), all requirements of Christianity at the time. But the clever Christians figured out all they had to do was remove those un-Roman elements through a little alteration of their beliefs and practices, and the religion became much more popular. Soon the temples to the old Gods were transformed into Christian churches

Constantine did two things that figure into this. Around 300 AD he made Christianity the official religion of the Roman Empire, so that it was no longer a heretical outlaw religion. He also moved the Empire's capital from Rome to Constantinople (now Istanbul), reflecting the fact that much of the economic vitality of the Empire was now concentrated in the eastern half. This sort of "freed up" Rome to fluorish as the center of the Christian (Catholic) Church, which eventually became known as the Roman Catholic Church.

Rome chose Christinity as their official religion : At the end, it was prohibited to have a religion other than Christianity
Christians accepted Roman custom and became flesh : Christians tried to adjust to Roman society by accepting many old Roman customs...accepting idolatry is a good example

Did you ever see "The Hot Chick" where Rob Schneider trades bodies with an attractive girl. Something like that happened in the past. The Christians took the Roman bodies and the Romans took the Christian bodies.

I believe it was under constantine that he outlawed all but christianity after he had a vision of the cross winning a battle for him, after this it was an offense punishable by death to not be christian, also rome controled the church, and pretty well chose what went into the new testiment and what did not. They controlled all findings of the church and christianity and the direction it took. So if you were a christian and believed the faith you believed rome, because they were one in the same.

Italy became the center of the Catholic church's power. It's ironic that the very same culture that persecuted Christians is now a country devoted to that very religion.
