laterly i've been thinking how cool it would be to just buy a ticket to someplace like australia, or england, and just fly there and see what happens. but it would be for an unknown time and everything. have you or anybody you know ever done this? if so, does it work? or just what what was your or their experience like?

We met a couple in Guatemala that did exactly what you want to do. Sold their house and got in their van and just headed south. They started in Canada!! I envied them at the time, but now I'm seeing what I can of the world and loving it!!

I have to save $$$ and put in for vacation time, so I plan my trips.
I did go on my dream vacation to New Zealand in 2005...went with 2 friends for 2 weeks and had a blast. 1 week in South Island to visit a cousin, and a week in North Island cruzin in an RV. Just got back from Norway and it's beautiful.

I have done something like that before I had a real job. But never expecting to work abroad.
I would safe up working for a job office on short term jobs and living with my parents I could safe most of the money.
Then I would buy a ticket to France or an Interail card (something like an Eurail pass.)
And travel till the money was almost spend.
To return home and start saving again.

Now I have a job and a house to come home to and I plan my trips more to get out of them what I can. But I have been luckey enough to get some 6 and 8 weeks trips to New Zealand and Australia.

When traveling I met a lot of people who travel for a longer time, working underway to lengthen the time of the trip.
For some it is worth the effort and hardships, others would have prefered to have waited a little longer so they could have started with more money.
Because most of the jobs are the kind you would not think about doing at home, like cleaner in a hotel, barman or barmaid, landscapers assistant that is being the guy with the shovel spreading manure or digging in the hot sun or icy cold, fruit picker, dishwasher in a big smelly hotel kitchen.
And often the work is illegal, you do not have the right paperwork so they do not need to pay you proper wages, sick leave and insurance.
At times the police might even check and you could be in trouble for even working at all.

Maybe you can get a student-work-visa, some countries do hand them to many people, others have restrictions on who can get them. With one you can get legal work, mostly for a year periode, or for half a year to work and a longer time to travel.
If you qualify, (mostly being a young person is enough,) do get one.

Anyhow, if you want to travel, DO, it is fun and you will always regret it if you do not grab the chance now.
I know several people who wanted to leave home for at least a year, (like getting a green card and work and travel in the USA for a year) and everytime before they had it organized they fell in love. Now they are daddies with resposabillities and will not go ever.

Yes, I have thought about it. To Barbados or England. But I haven't gotten up and done it.
