Pineapples grow on plants up to 80cm tall characterized by a rosette of narrow, pointed leaves that reach 90cm. Many varieties have sharp thorns on their leaves, which make harvesting difficult. New, thornless varieties have largely replaced these. When the plant is about 12 months old, a woody spike with 100 or more violet flowers sprouts from the center.

They grow in the ground - a spiky-leaved shrub. Here in the UK, I am growing one in a pot on the window sill, but it will soon have to be repotted and transferred to the dining table! It is 18 months old, 2 feet tall and 3 feet wide. It should send up a central stalk with pink flowers, which will mature into... a pineapple... in 6-18 months time!

I have seen pictures of pineapple farms from Hawaii and those plants look like a giant aloe vera plant (busch) with a pineapple in the middle. The harvesters are bending over to harvest the fruit, not reaching up.

They come from a fiberous bush, similar looking to an artichoke. There is no such thing as a pineapple tree. Many are grown in Hawaii, but there are a few in the Salinas valley of California.

If you cut the folage off and dry it out for a few days then pot it up, place it in a dark but humid atmostphere it MIGHT root - and though and behold you may even be able to grow another Pinnapple from it - in about 15 years,
Good Luck !!
