So I have a 60 gallon tropical community tank. Here's the story. Hmmm, so I go to feed my fish, and I see this baby snail crawling in the tank. How in the world did it get there? I know what some of you may say: it must of gotten in there when I brought new fish home from the store. But no! I don't think that can be. For one, when I bring new fish, I never dump the water in the tank, I just use a net to put the fish in after floating the bag for 30 minutes. And besides that, I have never gotten any rocks or anything along with my fish from the store that could of mistakenly been a snail. And secondly, I haven't gotten new fish for a month. Wierd huh! So how can this be? I never had a snail in the tank, only a Plecco and ghost shrimp. I am so confused!

Do you have any greenery in your tank? If memory serves, snails hatch from eggs, and there must have been an egg stuck to something like greenery. I don't know what their gestation period is, but there has to be a reasonable explanation.

Perhaps you should direct this question to the local pet store where you got the tank and your fish. They may have a more accurate idea how that came about.

Be prepared though - you may see more before it's all over with. Where there is one, chances are there are more.

Good luck to you!

Not silly, it happened to me at one point from live plants. Be careful or they will over run your tank. and they're nasty little critters. And don't believe that certain ones won't proliferate. They all do. I tried many methods to get rid of them and all seemed to fail. I know it may sound heartless, but get some snail away. That's what finally cleared my tank up. And it doesn't hurt your fish.

You don't have to feel silly at all
Most of the people don't know that they can bring snails into their tanks with plants

here is a link though on how to get rid of them if they overpopulate your tank, i like the natural way, which is the vegetable bait

hope that helps
Good luck

You probably bought a plant that carried snail eggs with it, and they just hatched recently in your tank, that's why they are there.

If you added live plants, snail eggs were probably on them
