You won't have far to go to find this one. A pet rock worked for me.

Honestly, what ever you as the parent are willing to take care of.
I have ferrets, snakes, dogs, cats, fish, and rodents...and a 16 month old human child.
He loves the animals, but his interaction with them is very limited, if at all. This will change as he grows.
Your children are too young to interact or care for a pet without strict supervision by you. At this point, you may as well get what ever pet you like and want to take care of. Probably not something poisonous though. Your children will be thrilled just having it in the house.
Bottom line is that there is no great pet for toddlers. I can think of a million dangers to either the pet or the child depending on what animal it is. So get what you want to take care of and let your children help with it as much as is safe for them to do so.

Hi Kelstar, For a 2 yr.old and 3 yr.old. They are still pretty young. What about a little turtle from the pet store!!! It's a start and you can talk to your children about the turtle and they can learn. Wait until they are at least 5yr.old and the youngest is 4 yrs. old and get a dog for them. Maybe one that needs to be rescue from a shelter. This would be a great pet for the whole family. It's something to think about while you wait. Lol

Depending on how much time you have to spend with your pet and how much space you have. If you have an active lifestyle and a reasonable back yard i would suggest a small to medium sized dog to grow with your children. If the pet was to stay indoors maybe a cat. If not much time i could suggest a bird or some gold fish all these will give plenty of enjoyment to you and your family. But remember in the long run you will be the one to take care of the animal

2 and 3 year olds are far too young to learn the responsibility for pet care and love and ownership. Wait until they are older.

it depends on what the 2 and 3 year old are like. some like to have a pet they can hold and play with while others just like something they can watch.
it also depends on how much effort and time the person helping the children take care of it are willing to put into the pet.
i'd say, if they're the type of kids who like to play with the animals, a puppy.

Children this age will accidentally kill a small pet. And they aren't old enough to handle a cat or dog without getting hurt. Try some goldfish for now. They can watch them and learn about them.
Later when they are older you can get a medium sized dog that is gentle. No pitbulls or dogs with issues.

A fish. Or a really well trained, old dog, who's used to kids.
Stay far away from the small animals, such as ferrets, rabbits, hampsters, gerbil. etc. Though they are commonly viewed as kid friendly pets, they are not. Definatly not for that age.

couple of gold fish never go a miss, there cheap and don't cost the world in maintenance and give it a few more years before you get a true pet.
