everyone has great ideas this page is an example of a diaper cake made like a button
the other site may have some stuff that will help you.
But I love your idea it is great and different.
you don't want to play all the games that include buttons. because you can over due the theme but I would probably go with guess the buttons. also another idea would have candles in baby food jars and paint the lid to look like a button and give those as favors or use as center pieces.
I hope this helps. Good Luck

You can get buttons at any thrift store of hobby store and use them as decorations. Also you could have little babies cut out with overalls on them and each guest while blindfolded has to place the buttons for the overall straps (sort of like pin the tail on the donkey). You could play a game of how many baby items can you come up with that require buttons. Give points to creative ones like "buttons on baby food jars that pop when the food is open" etc. You can play how many buttons big is mommy's tummy. Each guest has to estimate the length of string that would fit around the mommy's belly then have to string buttons on their string before measuring. You can buy a couple outfits that have buttons in the back (like a dress on a baby doll) and time how fast each person can button up baby, or unbutton baby! Maybe even make it longer and have them unbutton one outfit and put the baby doll in another outfit and button it up. Whoever has the best time wins. Just a few ideas. Great theme, hope you have fun!

Use blue buttons for the balloon weights. Make cut outs of buttons and put the baby's picture in the middle to give to guests. Use buttons as decoration on the table cloths. Have a teddy bear made with buttons for the eyes and nose wearing a t-shirt that says "cute as a button". Ask guests to bring buttons to the shower and afterwards create a button picture frame using the buttons. Make bingo or crossword sheets in the shape of buttons. Have a jar full of buttons and ask the guests to guess how many buttons are in the jar. Make name tags in the shape of buttons. Keep the baby shower simple and fun. Follow a basic baby shower, but at your theme to the shower. Have buttons or “as cute as a button” on all the normal display items. Good luck and congrats!

You can use buttons on the invitations as well as the thank-you cards if you don't mind making them. If weight of the card is a concern you can try to find a stamp at a craft/scrapbooking store or make you own by using a potato for the stamp.
To include it in the party have a game to see how many items/things use a button(s) for the baby (clothes, coat, etc.) The person with the most reasonable answers wins a prize.

Hear are a few ideas:

1. Fill a jar with buttons and let all the guests guess how many there are and the one who comes closest gets a prize.

2. For table center peices : glue or pin buttons onto candles to decorate them for center peices.

3. Sprinkle loose buttons in the center of tables.

4. For the cake: decorate with real buttons all over, cover with buttons made out of sugar or make in the shape of a button.

Thats all I could come up with for now. Hope this helps. good luck with your shower planning.

Buy a bunch of colorful buttons and decorate the area you're having the party in... your cake can be designed like a button. You can have party favors with a little ribbon through a button. You can make round cookies and decorate them like buttons as well with frosting. Sprinkle buttons all over the food table. :) Cute theme!!! Go to the crafting store and get inspired!

Make edible marzipan buttons for the tops of cupcakes:
Get some marzipan from the store (cooking section,) color it with food coloring (blue for boys, pink for girls) by kneading the color in. Roll out the marzipan and cut out little round circles, poke out a couple little holes inside each circle, let them dry out a little. Sometimes you can even press real buttons into the tops of the marzipan buttons to make the candy ones have the same pattern/shape as a real button.
Frost cupcakes and place the marzipan circles on top. SO cute!

Cut out felt or construction paper in button shapes, in different sizes, hang from the ceiling with fishing line or other invisible thread.

You can definitely use buttons on the invitations.

thread a button on a ribbon for each guest, if they say "baby" they have to give thier button to the person who calls them on it. Whoever has the most buttons gets a prize.

Pin the belly button on the baby game.. like pin the tail on the donkey.

Guess the # of buttons in a babyfood jar (or bigger if you want to spend the $. Check thrift stores, they usually have bags of buttons in the craft dept)

For the centerpiece....have a custom diaper cake created that is very simple (with coordinating color scheme). I make these, professionally, and if this were a cake I was going to make I would decorate it coordinating ribbon and different sized/shaped buttons on the ribbons.

The topper for this diaper cake would have a plush animal that was wearing something (overalls??) that had buttons (very firmly attached).

That's my ten cents...I will put my link below if you are interested in this type of centerpiece!!
