Yeah...a tornado. I was standing outside taking pics of the clouds in the sky and the next thing I know, my mom comes driving down the hill like a bat out of hell honking her horn. She pulled into my driveway saying there was a tornado. Then I saw it. It went right behind my house through a field. At the time, I lived in a small farming community in KS and the tornado hadnt hit any structures, just vacant fields. It was really windy and difficult to breathe. It felt like all the air was getting sucked out of my lungs. The birds were going crazy and the neighborhood dogs were barking like mad. All I could do was stand there and watch it while my mom took cover. And ya know what the kicker is? I was in such awe of it that I didnt even get a picture of it!

I experienced two tornadoes. The most noteworthy was when my wife and I were driving from a friends house in Carbondale, IL, heading back home to Chicago. We knew the weather was going to be bad, and we heard the storm system was producing tornadoes, but my wife and I lived in tornado alley all our lives and false alarms aren't uncommon. Everything was hunky dory until about an hour into our drive when the sky starts changing from gray overcast to a boiling cauldron of slate-gray (the clouds are called Cumulonimbus with mammatus -- pictures below). It looked very ominous... like this might be the real deal and we are in real danger. So we were tuned to a radio station that seemed to be focused on reporting the weather during the storm. The announcer said "This storm is producing a lot of tornadoes, they're just coming out of the sky like popcorn." This was something we knew already... and his mentioning it didn't help much. We were both sick with worry, though I pretended not to be. There was an energy in the air that was different from the hundreds of storms we'd seen in our lives. The rain started. A few scattered but large gobs at first. Within seconds it was a torrent of rain and wind. We felt as though a tornado was definitely close by. We were also unsure if we should keep driving or look for a place to pull off. If we pull off, should we do it at the next exit, or just pull off now? We don't know where there's going to be a tornado -- it could start right on top of us for all we knew, and it seemed very possible. The announcer on the radio is listing off the latest tornado sightings.
"We have reports of a tornado heading for Dix, IL."

We can hardly see because of the tremendous rain, but we're able to make out a sign for the next exit. It says "Dix 1 Mile".
"Holy s***! What are we going to do?!" We could hardly move! The highway was practically flooded, the rain is coming down faster and harder, then my car begins to vibrate from the wind. My wife starts crying and screaming. The windshield wipers clear my windshield and I can see it for a split second before my view is obscured.

It was a lot taller than you see in pictures. Miles high. It was right in front of us. My heart was pounding as we turned off the highway and felt our way to the nearest gas station. My wife was practically in the gas station before I had even made a decision about whether or not to get out of the car. Not only that, but the vacuum was so strong, I couldn't open my door without putting all of my weight into it, and I nervously ran to the store, paranoid the tornado was going to get me before I reached the door.
Once inside, we were safe. The clerk at the store knew nothing of the tornado. Long story short (too late) -- weeks later, we found out if was only an F1.

Always the groomsman never the groom. I've been around many tonados but never actually seen one since everyone freaks out and insists I stay with them in the basement.

I do love violent storms though.

Hurricane

We missed school and for the REALLY bad ones, the power was out for a week. We had to use candles to read by. We couldn't take showers, brush our teeth, or flush the toilet.

When they lightened down and we could go outside, there were branches EVERYWHERE and it was REALLY wet.
