A "grain" in a solid that has crystalline components is a fraction of it, a volume - sometimes very small, where the crystallographic orientation is constant. All the atoms sit in a perfect lattice position, consistently. Solids with many "grains" are considered multy- or poly-crystalline and the crystallographic orientation is generally different in each different grain.
