Sure we won't be trading with Darcy Regier or Brian Burke no more but is that bad? I don't think so. We got 26 other teams who would trade with us(Flames wouldn't make deal). Oilers got connections with Garth Snow, Glen Sather, Mark Messier, John Muckler etc.(even if Mess and Muck don't have jobs as of now, they should get one) Gretzky and more. Oilers got all the history there. All in all does it really hurt that Oilers lost the friendship of 2 GMs?

I think people overplay the situation. I think that more GMs commended Lowe rather than condemed him. We almost never dealed with Buffalo anyway, and the only deals coming from Anaheim were crap, so we lost nothing.

The only thing that effects us is to make sure that all our RFAs are signed because even if Burke and Regier don't need that player, I think they would go after them just because of Lowe. All in all, losing the friendship of 2 GMs was worth gaining the respect of many others.

It doesn't hurt the Oilers, and once the season starts...Regier and Burke will have calmed down.

People realize it's a business. When the owners agreed to the offer sheet formula, they knew it worked both ways, they also knew that in effect, nothing raises salaries faster.

One comment people keep making is that Lowe's antics open up the Oiler's RFAs to other team's offer sheets.

Well, based on the opinion of both Burke and Regier, Edmonton sucks, after all Burke said that his perusal of Edmonton's roster made him feel good that the HIGH draft picks he would be getting in return would allow him to get another player of Penner's calibre and potential.

So, if Edmonton's players are that bad, will other teams go after their RFA's? Probably not. If they do, the offer sheets will most likely be low enough to match, or else the Oilers take the draft picks.

If the floodgates open up and everybody attacks Edmonton's RFA's. Lowe could easily stockpile draft picks for each one he lets go.

All in all, I don't think Lowe's antics hurt the team at all. I think they are a very weak team at this point in time and the playoffs are a fantasy for them in the near future. If they can draft well, they will be able to re-build.

To some, the Vanek offer was a joke, but Vanek is high regarded in NHL circles as a perennial top 10 scorer. 5th in goals last year, 19th in points, and led the league in plus-minus. He has a great future.

It probably won't hurt the Oilers too much after Lowe's gone. I wouldn't expect to win too many deals as long as he's there though. Last year it was the other way around, Bobby Clarke pulling the same deal on the Oilers, what did you think of signing other team's restricted free agents then? And how did that work out for Clarke? Remember this is still 'the old boy's club'. Look at Ted Nolan, was NHL coach of the year in Buffalo, p'd off Regier at the end of the season and was out of hockey (NHL anyway) for a long, long time.
My opinion (worth about the same as a glass of tap water) is Lowe shot himself in the foot.

Yes.

The GM fraternity is a small one and what Lowe did was raise the arbitration value of every 0.5 point-per-game player to 4.5M per year. That probably made a lot of people mad. As long as the cap keeps going up everyone will be okay. If it goes flat, things will get tough for teams that signed big deals over the past 2 years.

The offer sheet is a little used weapon GMs have because they don't want it used against them. Basically in this case Lowe made an offer he knew the Ducks couldn't match (if Selanne and Neidermayer come back).

Is Penner worth 4.5/year right now? No way. Will that be a good deal 2 years from now - Very likely. And in the last year he'll probably be a bargin. I think he'll put up 30 goals and 25 assists this season.

More then you realize, look at the mess the Sabres are in because they were stupid enough to match the offer sheet. Why did the Sabres do it? Because they gave up good players. In the end we see the game of the Oilers' GM. That game is go after other teams RFA and give the offer sheet to either PUNISH the other team(in other words they are pissing off ALL the teams by RAISING MARKET VALUE when the owners though they got past that crap with the Salary Cap) or they get the player. Other teams will start playing that game when the Oilers get RFAs. Yeah teams will be doing it to teach the Oilers a lesson. It isn't going to kill them but it will hurt them. Oh and you mention about Wayne, why the H**L would you want a player from the Coyotes as bad as they are? Don't think about the three team trade idea either because that would kill the Coyotes if people notice they are getting talent and then trading it to the Oilers. See you can't get around things for too long.
This won't kill them, and time will heal wounds(if the behavior changes) but it will effect them.

Not a chance it hurts them.

It's professional sports, and everyone in the organization needs to do everything they can to put together a winning team. If those other managers don't like the Oilers tactics, tough. They shouldn't be managing a professional hockey team.

I think the fact that Burke was so pissed off is hilarious. What does he think he'd do if managing the Oilers? If he wanted to put together a winning team, he'd have to do the exact same thing.

brian burke owes the cup to the oilers when they made the pronger trade. the sabres management stinks anyway. lowe showed he had balls to improve his team and thats a gm's job. . if the right trade is made that can benifit the team then it will be made. lowe can lowblow Darcy Regier & Brian Burke because they dont have the guts.

the oilers need to worry about taking care of their own business and not worry about if brian burke is still going to send them a hallmark at christmas.when burke got mad it was because with offer the oilers made to penner the ducks could not resign him and fit it under the cap.this did not make up for being fleeced in the pronger trade but it does help.

Maybe but a professional isn't going to let personal feelings get in the way if the Oilers are who they want/need to deal with.

It doesn't hurt that the Oilers made a few GM's mad because you aren't supposed to be nice to other GM's, so you gotta do what you gotta do.
