If they seem completely natural and unpretentious and have nothing to prove, nothing to lose or gain from their contact with me, and they don't seem at all obsequious, manipulative or domineering. If they have affectations or can't seem to think for themselves, I do not trust them.

Body language. They need to look you in the eye and not make odd movements, however slight. It's like playing poker; you look for the signs. Takes while to develop a skill such as this.

Also, are they truthful? If they ever lie or tell you rumors about someone else, expect them to do the same about you.

That all depends on the type of relationship. Brains for some, appearance for others, witt for still more, sensitivity for many. I depends. You are certainly going to think about your accountant different from your lover, and your lawyer different from your friend. It just depends.
