1999 Chevy S-10, 107000 miles. Recently, when idling (in park or in drive) my interior lights and my headlights get dim. My battery gauges drops to about 12 volts (I know that with the car running, the gauge should be around 14v). When I pull away, applying power to the engine, the gauge goes back to 14v, and the lights return to normal. Until I reduce power to the engine and idle again, then the problem returns.

Is this a problem with the battery or the alternator?

AS others have said, take it to an auto parts store that will check out the charging system and the battery. The problem sounds like it is either the alternator or the voltage regulator. good luck.

Alternator. It could just be idling too slow, but it sounds like the alternator is getting weak. A common problem on late model GM vehicles.

Check your belt, it might be loose.
