I know the old engines used a heavy oil mix compared to the 50:1 of today's engines. I found this below, I hope it correct.

Q - What is the fuel/oil mix for my motor?

A - The following is generally true: 1958 and prior used 20:1, 1959 thru 1963 used 24:1, 1964 and newer use 50:1. High performance usage (racing) requires a ratio of 25:1. New engine break-in (not DI) requires 25:1.

are you using non-detergent motor oil or 2 cycle oil? the '53 calls for motor oil at 16:1. the '59 can use that ok, but can also use 2 cycle oil at 25:1. non-detergent is the key word. they are made of crude metals compared to modern engines. take care of them, they may be valuable to your grandchildren.

I have worked on these older motors for many years and with today's moderm two cycle oils 32:1 would be fine for this motor. Enjoy your vintage motor! Pete

The new synthetic oils are much supperior. Stil chain saw oils will work at 50 to one. You can use chain saw oil for boat motors but the boat motor oils don't work for chain saws. They wont take the heat!
