I have replaced a grassed area with rainbow stones done by a handyman. He compacted the area then laid down weed cover sheet. Despite this Max manages to dig through and the weeds are growing everywhere and stones scattered around. I was thinking of removing the stone, covering the area with something that hardened (sand and cement mix? what type) then replacing the stones back. How to go about it?. Any other suggestions? Thank you

They are called "rainbow stones" but they are just white small stones that you scatter in some areas in the garden as a feature, in lieu of grass or slabs.

You might try using the mortar that they use for laying bricks and instead of using the bricks and placing mortar between them, put some mortar into the area, a small area at a time since it dries quickly and place the rocks into the mortar. Since they are rainbow colors, you don't need to do them in any particular order of color, just put them in. I would do them as close together as you can, just laying them on the mortar and then pressing them in until they are about even across. To help accomplish that you can use a small board to press them all the same height up. That will deter digging as well as any weeds getting in between the rocks and growing. It will look quite pretty actually. For an added effect, get an outdoor patio table that has an inlaid edge on the top and do the same thing on the top of the table and put it on the patio rocks. Then get a clay pot and paint it rainbow colors or paint it light blue with a rainbow on it and put a pretty multi colored plant into it and set it on the table. Then you have an area that is an artists showcase in your yard. If the area in question is like a garden idea, make it look even nicer by putting edging stone around it but don't use any that are more than 4 feet high. You just want to border it off in a contrasting color.

Dog has to go. People who have dogs kept in the back yard usually have bare dirt rutted with holes where nothing will grow. Dog has no respect for tiny little stones.

Try slapping down 200-lb slabs of flagstone, and watch as doggie goes mentally ill trying to dig through that.

By the sounds of it the handyman did the correct method.....
Your problem is you..... your dog ( I assume max is a dog...), is board and obviously not trained correctly...
If Max was content , trained and had regular attention paid to him, ( Walks, games etc. ) he would not be digging in the first place.....
1. ... call Dr. Harry........
2. ... try enrolling in an obedience class for pooches....
3. ... If you want a dog as a pet, then train and give it your time...... simple really.....
4. .. Buy it some toys to play with.... spend more time with it...

pepper the stones with pepper, the dog won't like the smell and will leave your garden alone!
