since this is in the science category: energy can not be created nor destroyed. What you claim to be energy is an emotion cos you feel good when you make people laugh so directing energy from a bunch of laughing people is preposterous...sorry

I don't really have a good answer but I will say that you have a good question. Most questions on here are concerning extremely superficial topics. I will say that when people direct positive energy toward you(like when you make people laugh) that the good feeling you get, the confidence it gives you, the pleasure, etc. IS their energy being absorbed into you... maybe. So I guess It might happen naturally without doing anything special to "absorb" others' energy.

You are misusing the term energy. You use energy by running, turning on a light bulb, driving your car. The 'energy' you speak of is a human psychological response, basically summated as 'when the tribe is happy, you are happy'. It is something that happens to you from your sub-conscious mind, and that you have no control over, which is why it mystifies some people. We do not like to think we are not in perfect control of ourselves, when in reality nothing could be further from the truth.
An answer you might like: the only way in physics you could 'absorb energy from people' is by direct contact, which would enable transfer of heat energy. Go out and hug someone.

This is probably more of a meta-physics question than a physics question, but I love this type of stuff.
I agree that people give off energy and that others recieve this energy. The problem with this is that we can measure the energy coming off a person and it doesn't amount to enough energy to influence others.
This is the common foil to astrology. The stars and planets exert energy on us, but it's less than the amount the television hits us with.
However, I tend to have an open mind about our scientific limitations and based on the numerous shortcomings in our understanding of the universe I believe that we might not have a complete grasp of how we are affected by different energies. I think it's entirely possible we emit positive waves of energy that influence those around us in a positive way and negative waves of energy that influence others in a negative way. Through the years this type of belief has manifested itself in numerous ways - the most common being the axioms "Good things happen to good people" or "you reap what you sow" or "smile and the world smiles with you, cry and you cry alone".
Until we have a better understanding of what this emotional energy is it won't be possible to understand how it's propogated and absorbed. But it'll remain an interesting topic for me until that day comes.

The most important known energy people radiate is the thermal. Each average person produce 100 watts of heat and a part of the heat is radiate as infrared. Another part of the heat goes to the air as convective heat.
But the 'positive energy' you are asking is not real energy, but is more an emphatic optimism, happiness, that are psychological factors.

Other people gave some good answers and "preposterous" is probably all that needs to be said. I would just like to add that people do not glow like light bulbs in some psychic dimension that projects energy onto other people. Anything psychic is not science, is not real for that matter. It is people playing tricks on other people, people finding hidden supernatural forces in things that have none because there is none to be found. And that is why people can believe in this stuff because it is very very difficult to prove that something does not exist (loch ness monster, flying saucers, people from space making crop circles, bigt foot, telekinesis, mind reading, telling the fututer, and the list can go on and on). Court TV has their psychic detectives nonsense but in general they have little to do with solving anything it is just that court tv wants a good show and portrays this stuff in a way that does not match up to the facts. These people are as fake as the positive energy you are talking about. Pure blathering nonsense. A thought characteristic of much of the so called higher life form referred to as human.

i have no idea. but i know that my head hurts when other people around me in a tight space are stressed out. well i guess it doesn't really hurt. i can just feel the pressure or something. even if i just entered the room and i had no idea what they were talking about. so i guess that's kind of absorbing negative energy...
