Pain, or a lack thereof. When you do not feel pain, you are happy because pain is all that is unpleasant, and relief from that is a favorable event. That is why happiness means so many different things to different people: different things make pain go away for different people. A new SUV might make me happy because it makes me forget about my pain, but it may not make someone else forget about their pain and therefore make them happy. And that is why it is also temporary, pain is a constant and controlling thing. After a while, you remember your pain again and that happy moment fades because it's initial edge wore off or something that causes pain (sadness, anger, etc.) happened and the pain takes over once again.

...the feeling one gets when he has achieved something, when he has overcome an obstacle, when he has come to the solution of a problem.
Happiness is an intense feeling that rewards the productive person. Contentment is a state of enjoyment of what one is experiencing, whether he has achieved it or not. Happiness is not a permanent state because it has to be earned. It lasts only as long as the person has given it enough fuel. The fuel for happiness is productivity.
