It keeps happening because the sourness isn't getting cleaned out all the way each time... so it comes right back very easily. Also, the hot and humid weather allows them to sour very quickly.
1. Use 1 cup of ammonia in the hottest wash load with your regular detergent.
2. Don't let wet towels lay around on the floor or in the hamper for any length of time.... wash or hang to dry immediately after using.
3. Never let a wet load sit in the washer after it's done... always put right into the dryer.
4. Never try to mask the smell by overdoing it with Febreeze or Downey or the like.

Just run your washer on a regular cycle with 1 cup bleach. If you have a front loading washer only 1/2 cup. When your clothes get sour smelling, run then through another wash cycle with 1 cup baking soda in the wash and 1 cup white vinegar in the rinse (1/2 cup each if you have a front loader). You will only have to do this once for a soured load.

Does this happen with everything you wash, or just your towels?
If it happens with everything, you may need to clean the hoses that feed water into the washer. They have mesh over them, that can get clogged with junk that can then start to smell. So the water going in is nasty.
If it is just your towels, they may be getting old and it might be time to replace them. Have you tried using liquid fabric softener?

Add baking soda along with your detergent to the wash cycle. And be sure you DO NOT buy scented detergent. Just remember..."clean" is NOT supposed to smell..scented soap might be your problem.
