For starters, you will end up with a negative number.

Find the least common denominator of 2/3 and 5/4,
which is 12.
2/3 = 8/12
5/4 = 15/12

8/12 - 15/12 = -7/12

Good luck in your studies,

nicely, there are some important steps. If the fraction is a mixed selection (an entire selection accompanied via a fractional selection, which includes 3 a million/2, pronounced 3 and one a million/2), the 1st step is to transform it to an unsuitable fraction. the least perplexing thank you to do it is multiply the completed selection (for this reason 3) via the denominator (the selection on the backside, for this reason 2) and upload the product to the unique numerator (the selection on the suited, for this reason a million). the recent finished will become your new numerator and the completed selection disappears. So changing 3 a million/2 to an unsuitable fraction could appear like this. 3 a million/2 = ((3 * 2) + a million) / 2 = (6 + a million) / 2 = 7 / 2 (pronounced seven halves) once you have switched over all mixed numbers to unsuitable fractions, the subsequent step is to hit upon a basic denominator (exchange each and every of the fractions so as that all of them have a similar selection on the backside). permit's say you elect to subtract 5/2 - 2/3. This area is slightly perplexing, yet as quickly as you get the carry close of it, this is going to become like 2nd nature. you will exchange the way each and every fraction seems without changing this is fee. you already know that in case you multiply any selection via a million, it would not exchange the selection's fee. and you already know that numbers like 2/2 and 5/5 are equivalent to a million. in simple terms think of approximately it: 2 halves make an entire, and 5 fifths make an entire as nicely. So multiplying a selection via 2/2 or 5/5 won't exchange this is fee. ***in case you do no longer already comprehend, once you multiply fractions, you purely multiply the numerators and your product will become the recent numerator, then you definitely do a similar with the denominators*** So for our occasion 5/2 - 2/3, we elect each and every fraction to have a basic denominator. the least perplexing thank you to hit upon the fundamental denominator is to apply the manufactured from your modern-day denominators. So because of the fact our denominators are 2 and 3, our basic denominator would be 6. So we are able to multiply our first term, 5/2, via 3/3, and multiply our 2nd term, 2/3, via 2/2. It feels like this. 5/2 * 3/3 = 15/6 2/3 * 2/2 = 4/6 Now all we do is subtract the numerators. The denominator will stay a similar for the answer, till you may simplify it. 15/6 - 4/6 = 11/6

The same way you deal with any fraction except your answer will be a negative number.
For example, 2/3 - 5/4 can be expressed as 8/12 - 15/12
If you subtract the numerators as you always do with fractions, you have 8 - 12 which comes out to -4 as the rule for subtraction when dealing with negatives is to subtract the smaller from the larger, but if the second number is larger then you will always have a negative number. (To visualize this, if the temperature on a cold winter day is eight degrees and by night, the weather forecast calls for the temperature to drop twelve degrees, what can you expect the night time temperature to be?)
Therefore your answer is -4/12 or -1/3

ok i had a problem in hight school trying to undstand this so i tell you how i finall got it

you have to find the common denomanator

so you take 2/3 and 5/4
4x3 is what =12 that your common denomanator

then you have to take the 2 and x's that by 4 =8
so 2/3 = 8/12

5/4 the same except you x'sthe 5 by 3 ex at bottom

2
-
3 x 4 = 12
here you times the 2 and the 4 and you get 8 you put the 8 over 12

5
-
4x3=12

here you times the 5 by the 3 and you get 15

so you take 15/12 - 8/12= 7/12 and that cannot be reduced

hope that helps gppd luck

First, find the least common denominator, which will be 12 and convert the fractions.

2/3 becomes 8/12 because you have to multiply the numerator and denominator by 4 if you want the denominator to be 12.

5/4 becomes 15/12 because you have to multiply the numerator and denominator by 3 to get the denominator to be 12 here.

So, 8/12 - 15/12 = -7/12

There you go.

first, covert the denominate to the same., and multiply the above number by the same: 2/3 - 5/4 = 8/12 - 15/12 = - 7/12

2/3 - 5/4

Make sure both have the same base:
8/12 - 15/12
= -7/12
