I am thinking of upgrading my 333Mhz pc's cpu chip to something a little faster, maybe 1.0 Ghz +. Can i just go out and buy any old processor?

if not how do i know its going to be compatible with my old motherboard??

many thanks

No. There are many types of processors for different types of computers. More importantly in your case, there are different FSB (Front Side Bus) speeds and socket types. Your best bet is to locate a manual for your motherboard (usually not difficult online) and find out its maximum supported speed, its socket type (if you can't tell by looking at it), as well as maximum RAM.

Now for some really bad news: your processor speed indicates to me that you have an FSB of about 66 Mhz. If this is the case, then the fastest processor you can use, I believe, is only 450 Mhz. If you are VERY lucky, the FSB can be increased to 133 MHZ, which is what you would need for a 1 Ghz processor. But this tends to be very unlikely, especially with OEM motherboards.

No they are not all the same. There are only two companies that produce CPU's which are Intel and AMD. Once you get that right, you have to figgure out how many pins it has. Theres 700 to 940 pins also called socket. So your 333 probably is a socket A which your never going to be able to upgrade unless you go to some dinosaur graveyard. If your upgrading, theres great deals out there to get a motherboard, cpu and some memnory for a up to date computer for only $200 dollars. You will need to chage your motherboard, central processing unit and memory to really get into the 1 ghz but just to let you know 2007 were all about Dual core processors running at 3 GHZ.

The motherboard is a socket 775 & so is the processor it also supports the 800mhz fsb & the Pentium D so in theory it should be compatible. Beware the pins are located on the motherboard not the processor so be careful when you install it not to bend them.

no you need to find a cpu that is the same SOCKET form factor as the old one and also find out what chips your mobo will support. you would be best served buy just buying a cpu and mobo combo anny 300mhz system is so old its not worth monkey'n with

Each board only supports a limited range of chips. For a board as old as yours, I doubt there are any chips available now.
