I recently burned a couple downloaded movies. I am using 2 different types of discs (I had to by new ones, thus 2 types) DVD +R and DVD -R. I also used Windows DVD Burner and Nero (DVD burner first then heard from a friend Nero was better). The discs all play fine on my computer. I just went to play them on my DVD player and for some reason only a few of the discs work. Completely random ones don't work. I'm pretty sure it's not due to the type of disc or the burning program because each type works.
I don't know if certain movies are formatted to be unviewable once they are burned. Any suggestions would be great, I am completely stumped.

The DVD +R disks I am using are RW.
Both the + / - R discs will play on my DVD player. There are 7 DVDs I burned 3 are +R 4 are the -R . 2 were burned with Windows DVD burner, the other with Nero. Out of those discs 2 of the +R play and 3 of the -R.

Everyone's answers have been very helpful. I am still confused as to why some discs play and others don't. On Nero the basic format is NTSC which is what I'm using. I just finished burning a movie on the DVD+R and it works perfectly. It was burned using the max speed. I don't get an option to finalize the disc, so I assume it does it on it's own.

well some settops are better than others ... but besides that make sure the disks are being 'closed' when u burn them ... and no they arnt formatted to be unburnable after they are burned .. no such thing ... its either the disks themselves the player doesnt like .. or the player just isnt very compatible with burned disks ... or ur not closing the session when u burn them ..

Well colage Meg it is in fact
The Quality of the Media.
The Format of the Media
The Speed of the Media.
The Sofware you use.
The Settings you choose on the Software.
So lets cover it like this
You want to buy the highest quality Media you can for your projects.
There is a big inconsistancy in some brands.
Here is a Quality Guide to use.
http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
The Format.
DVD-R Media is the most widely used and recognised, in computers and players alike.
So if you have a Newer computer that will read and write DVD+R or DVD+RW and you have and oloder computer or player it can't read this media and thus wont play them.
The Speed
Again if you are using an newer computer and you use 16X Media and are trying view it on an Optical Drive that is 4X then there is the problem.
Next Software
Contrary to popular belief Nero is not the best Software
Roxio's Toast-8 is.
Next if you are trying to copy Movies
They first need to be ripped.
Then they are copied to your hard drive in the form of a Video-TS folder
Then most need to be compressed to fit on a standard 4.7gb disc
So as you can see there is a lot more to it then just put in a disc and copy.
Here is another link covering the difference in Formats.

Try using a different brand media... dvd-r disks seem to work better than dvd+r, especially in older DVD players. Or you could try burning at a slower speed, sometimes that helps.
EDIT
RW media should NEVER be used for playing in a stand alone player, unless the player is specifically designed for it. Most do not support RW, especially older ones.

Well, to begin with, ther are several types of videos that will play even on an ordinary CDROM. But, some of the movies might be coded, where they might play a few times and then nothing. DVD makers have been making them to where they cant be copied and if they are, they wont play in most DVD players hooked to a tv. But, there are ways to remedy the problem, its called vcdhelp.com. It has many sources, plus you can convert the file so it will play. Hope it helps.

First of all, make sure that the DVDs you are burining are being closed. This is extremely important.
If that doesn't solve the problem, try burning at a lower speed and use DVD-R.
Older DVD players seems to be picky about the DVD media. You might want to expermiment a bit with what brand your DVD player seems to work well and stick to it.

As people have stated, there are some compatibility differences between + and -. But most of the time, it does not matter much. In your case of try using different DVD players to play the dvds that your original dvd player would not play.
Hope this helped :] ~

here is my tips to you before burning dvd. make sure the blank dvd is free from any dirt (fibers, eye brow, etc., , this sometimes coz the problem.
on your problem some downloaded movies are in different kinds of format PAL/NTSC you need to use a dvd maker like in Nero Vision 4 you will be promted that the video you want to be dvd movie is in different format that you set on NV. but it will reformat on your choice format (PAL/NTSC).
on choosing the right format choose the format that your dvd player can play.
be sure you also have the right decoder for the movie you downloaded.

you need to use DVD -R which is most compatible with most dvd players out there...I know this because I researched this on my own and also through my experience....DVD + R disc would not play on my portable dvd player...DVD - R is what you need to use at all times.

the only reason you DvD player is most likely not reading this is because is doesn't read burt DvD's or Your Dvd player can't your selected formats.
If your Dvd player saYS it can read the Dvd+R and DvD-R.
They your Dvd definatley just can't read Burt DvDs
to slove this problem simply soft mod your DvD player.
hope this helps
