I do.....I put some of the water that's coming out of the washer in the bottle and shake it, then pour it in the washer.

I use Sun brand. Fresh and Clean scent seems to last the longest and smell the best to me. My hubby's shirts smell good for days. It's very budget friendly, too. I find it at Wal Mart, Family Dollar and Big Lots. We just bought this enormous jug at Big Lots for $5. I am completely disappointed with the Downy fabric softener sheets. I bought the lavender & vanilla scent. The clothes don't even especially smell right out of the dryer. Oh well! Live and learn. I'm just using them up and then I will buy something else.
