Gaffers tape...available at your local sound&light supply store. It is designed for that purpose, and comes in a variety of colors. It holds stuff down, but leaves no nasty residue when pulled up, unlike duct tape and others.. BTW, from the other answers, isn't it called 'duct' tape, not 'duck'? Gaffers tape is not the same, but I have never heard of 'duck' tape, before.WTF?

I agree with TC, if you have carpet and pad, you can put the wire under the carpet. The wire is better protected and will never be a tripping hazard. Duct tape will leave marks on the carpet when removed, and will nover stay down anyway.
If you have glue down carpet, you will have to try something else. I whould attach the cable to the baseboard or go through the attic or crawl space before running on the carpet.

For less grief get a wireless router and a wireless Internet card. They are often on sale and they do not involve any cable, holes, taping, or ugly stuff on the carpet.

duck tape? Maybe. IF there's another computer in the house, a wireless router, which anyone can buy at CIrcuit City or Best Buy, would be a start. Buck back to the cable. I think what you want, might be electrical tape (No it's not eletrical itself. That name used to throw me, too). If you have any exposed wires, wrap them with it, while you're at it.

I would try and place it under the carpet, next to the wall. The wireless router is another good idea. Good luck.

Panda is right, both about the gaffers tape, and about the "duck" tape. Do they sell that in the pet department, or at the feed store?

if you want to tape the cable to the floor. I would use stage tape.
you can get it at music store. that sells equipment. its bang for your buck...you get more tape than duck tape and the price is reasonable

get a pair of needle nose pliers and lift up on the carpet next to the wall. Place the wire under it. Use a butter knife or a putty knife to push it back in place.
