It ALL depends on where and what you are trying out for. Obviously in LA you would need to have an agent to tryout for like a movie or something. But if you are just trying out for a play in your town you just go into the audition with best interests and hope for the best!

If you are trying out for a musical, pick a song that will show off your voice the best, show your range and style that fits the show.

If just a play, most aren't crowded. And how they treat you? Well, THAT all depends on the director and such. Most of the time they want to make you feel as comfortable as you can be. Those are the auditions I LOVE! and will remember for the rest of my life!

Auditioning is one of my favorite parts of the play process! Make it yours too! And tryout for everything you can and make the best of it!
GOOD LUCK!! :)

you have it backwards, you dont start by auditioning for professional work. you start with the school plays . you don't even look for an agent until you are an accomplished actor and have something the agent can sell to casting directors. And finally, in professional casting, they always cast by looks first and then by talent. every actor, with rare exception, has gone through this. So get your head on straight and start at the bottom. It takes years and years sometimes.
