Who says you can't keep a beautiful tank, even if it's just one gallon!
If you REALLY want to keep fish, the only one you can keep is a Betta, male or female.

But here is a better idea:

1) Get a small filter, like those 1-3 gallon filter they sell at ZELLERS, if they don't fit, go to a pet shop tell them your problem and they might get you something else.
2) Buy some java moss and some aquarium gravel and have a overhead light, wait a few days for the java moss to stick itself to the gravels(you can put some gravel on top of the java moss to hold it in place). The gravels aren't really necessary, but if you want to make a more natural habitat for your shrimp, i would strongly recommend the gravels, they should be about 3-8 mm.
3) Buy some shrimps, i suggest 4 red cherry shrimps and put them in the tank, since red and green mix really well.

There you go, now you have a beautiful tank, with just a filter, some gravel, java moss and a couple of shrimps!

First off: NO goldfish. Goldfish are meant to live in at least 15 gallons of water each. Any smaller and their internal organs get stunted and their growth is inhibited. It's very cruel. Not to mention they give off more waste than any other pet fish and require a good volume of water to accumulate this waste in, with an extra-strong filtration system.

The only fish that could even survive in such a small amount of water is a betta. However, a betta still wouldn't necessarily be healthy, nor would it live as long as it could. 1 gallon of water accumulates waste really fast, so your fish would be swimming in a concentrated solution of his own poop half the time. This would lead to lots of health problems, which aren't cheap to treat - with the amount you'd spend on medication over your betta's lifetime, you might as well get a proper 2.5 gallon tank.

Other than a betta, no fish can survive in such a small amount of water. I second the idea of planting your tank and putting in some cherry shrimp. It's really low-maintenance and aesthetically pleasing.

well one betta could probably live in a one gallon tank with a heater + a water filter but everyone on here will tell you this:
no fish should live in a fish BOWL permanantely
you need to completely change your bowl water every 2-3 days.
you need a 2.5 gallon tank , heated, filtered and air filtered for your betta to thrive.
and goldfish can not live in fish bowls no matter how many goldfish they put in a bowl on elmos world.

Ignore the response above. You need water current to have a heater, so don't use a heater in a bowl. You can try a fighting fish, some neon tetras, goramis, one of those small frogs. Try a half inch goldfish, or something like that. What ever fish you decide on, make sure it is small, do not over feed, and change the water every week. Good luck!

For a small bowl you are limited to a goldfish variation, a Black Moor or a Betta. I wouldn't bother with the heater though, they are coldwater fish.
