Turn off PC,
Open case.
Insert card insot spare PCI slot
Close case
Turn PC on, install drivers if supplied/required although most are avail within windows now.

very easy!
First make sure opening the case on your pc will not void and warranty.
If it doesn't, open the case (with the pc unplugged) and make sure you have a spare PCI slot (a small slot ,on the motherboard about 3 inches long toward the bottom back of the pc)
If you do, go to the store (computer store, walmart, etc.) and buy a PCI network adapter (aka LAN card). Open the box and follow the step by step instructions.

Either buy a pci lan card, open the box and fit it in a spare pci slot and install the software, or buy a usb lan card , load the software first and just plug it in.

You cannot install anything on the CPU, by LAN card do you mean network card? If so, there should be some white slots on the motherboard, that's where you slot them in.

get a usb lan card as the empty pci slot can be used in the future.

Installing a NIC in your computer is not hard but if you are not sure what you are doing there are somethings that you can mess up. I would recommend asking a buddy or your it department to install the NIC and show you how. Most IT people won't have a problem with this, since is very easy.
