Yes it is illegal and I am glad to see young readers taking up the cause and telling people so. Federal Copyright Laws protect an author's work until 70 years after their death. That means an author has the right to write books and SELL them. They are not given away for free. You are stealing - just as though you walked into the author's living room and stole a TV set. JK Rowling and her publisher are fighting back. The French police busted a kid the other day translating Book 7 into French and posting it. I imagine his parents were shocked. Also most of these sites with books posted are viruses put up as jokes by sickos. If you want books, get a job and buy them. Babysit. Mow lawns. Walk dogs. Flip burgers. If that is out of the question, use the public library. Do not steal from authors. Pax - C

If a book is in the public domain, then try Project Guttenberg or World Wide school. If the books you'r after were produced in the last decade or so, then you've got a long wait for them to fall into the public domain. Unless the book is in the public domain then it is not legal to read them for free online.

If you like science fiction/fantasy, you can read several popular authors at the Baen Free Library.
The authors include Eric Flint, David Drake, Mercedes Lackey, John Ringo, Fred Saberhagen, Harry Turtledove, David Weber and others.

These are books that are published by Baen and that the authors have chosen to offer for free online.
