Christ put us here for a reason - we may not know it at times but it is in his hands. Live your life to the fullest and appreciate all that is around you.

Desiderata
Go placidly amid the noise and haste,
and remember what peace there may be in silence.
As far as possible without surrender
be on good terms with all persons.
Speak your truth quietly and clearly;
and listen to others,
even the dull and the ignorant;
they too have their story.
Avoid loud and aggressive persons,
they are vexations to the spirit.
If you compare yourself with others,
you may become vain and bitter;
for always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself.
Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.
Keep interested in your own career, however humble;
it is a real possession in the changing fortunes of time.
Exercise caution in your business affairs;
for the world is full of trickery.
But let this not blind you to what virtue there is;
many persons strive for high ideals;
and everywhere life is full of heroism.
Be yourself.
Especially, do not feign affection.
Neither be cynical about love;
for in the face of all aridity and disenchantment
it is as perennial as the grass.
Take kindly the counsel of the years,
gracefully surrendering the things of youth.
Nurture strength of spirit to shield you in sudden misfortune.
But do not distress yourself with dark imaginings.
Many fears are born of fatigue and loneliness.
Beyond a wholesome discipline,
be gentle with yourself.
You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.
Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.
With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy.

Why are we on earth? Well... GOD was in the beginning, and by his very nature is a creator he created the universe and all things in it, next he created man in his likeness.
So the answer to your question is, GOD was missing something.. an unforced Loving relationship (free will) with man his creation. Unlike the relationship he had/has with his angels. He does not want a forced Love but he is a very jealous GOD and wants our LOVE more than anything else!!!! That he gave his one and only SON for that relationship with us and everyone that ever walked on this Planet we call earth!
P.S.
Just read the BIBLE ALL THE ANSWERS are their!

I'm a Christian and the Bible tells us that we are here to love and serve God. Becoming a Christian means admitting that we are all born sinners and that we are incapable of entering heaven without accepting God's gift of salvation. This means believing that Jesus Christ came to earth in man's form, died on the cross for the sins of the world, and was resurrected by God. We ask God for forgiveness of our sins and accept Him as our Lord and Savior. Christians live our lives by following the teachings of Christ. It's really that simple. We can't get to heaven just by "living a good life", we have to be saved by God's grace. There's nothing more you have to do to gain salvation except believe and ask God to save you. If you want a copy of a prayer to pray for salvation, I can send or post one. If you want more info you can visit a Christian church or read the Bible (New Testament; books Matthew, Mark, Luke and John). The Bible is available in modern-language translations that are much easier to understand than the traditional King James version. I hope this helps you and I'll be praying for you.

This may sound a little deep, but here goes: I firmly believe that we are in an ever progressing state of development. We had a spirit pre-existence, where, by our choices and progress, we were given the opportunity to come to earth for a physical body and be tested further by our experiences here. I do not believe that the progression stops after death, rather, I believe it will continue on.
There is a vast amount of knowledge out there and it would be utterly impossible to gain it all in this life. Remember that we only use approximately 10% of our brain capacity. Ask yourself what that other 90% is for and when will we have access to it? I believe that life is eternal and this is just the interim phase of it and a very brief phase at that! I believe that we all have a purpose of some sort that is designated to us according to the gifts we demonstrated in that pre-existence. That means to me that some of us willingly accepted certain circumstances because we knew, at that time, what could be gained.
This of course begs the question...."What about the suffering of others?". If you look at the lifetime that we spend here in the context of eternity, we are here only a miniscule time. ALL things will give us experience and can be for our good, depending on what we learn and take away from all of our experiences. I know it is hard to accept this when you see someone in pain or dealing with hardship or sorrow, but they must have something of great worth that they need to accomplish or learn...or maybe we need to learn something of great worth by gaining compassion and insight from their plights. Some of us may be here to teach others to be compassionate and to do that, certain obsticles would be necessary to that end.
I personally remember babysitting a serverly brain damaged child when I was a teen and wondering why he had to live that way? The more I learned to love this child, the more I understood what a blessing he was to those who had the privilege to know him and how he changed the lives of everyone who came into his life. He was here only a few short years, but he left an indelible mark on many people. I think he is continuing on the other side to impact still more.
Now here is where I wax religious: We see a lot of people in this world that are making some very poor choices and those choices are causing much suffering for others, but remember, there is ABSOLUTELY nothing that we can suffer that the Savior did not suffer when he took upon himself the sins and pain of this world. Those innocent people who are caught in the crosshairs are here for some purpose and are deeply loved by him and he is very much aware of their condition. They WILL gain their rest and their reward. We will never be given more than we can bear. This tells me that they must be extremely strong and valiant people to have so much heaped upon them.
If a belief in God, or whatever personage one worships, helps them to understand their purpose in this life then they should cling to that for everything they've got! It doesn't make you weak or feable minded, as some would have you believe, but it makes you strong and helps you to endure much of what life throws at you. I have had my share and believe me, I don't think there are many people out there that would want to trade places with me, but I know that my trials have strengthened me.
I hope this is the answer you are looking for.

This is a very important question that greatly affects how we live our lives. It is really a religious question, one that motivates many people to seek God. There are many, many ways to answer it, though the best answers always point to God. I like the one given in the Westminster Larger Catechism:
Question 1: What is the chief and highest end of man?
Answer: Man's chief and highest end is to glorify God, and fully to enjoy him forever.
The Westminster Shorter Catechism has a similar answer:
Question 1: What is the chief end of man?
Answer: Man’s chief end is to glorify God, and to enjoy him forever
The fact that this is the first question answered in these historic books shows how important it is.

If you aren't religious, it is hard to understand facts I accept readily about God and His character. The fact is that God created mankind and everything on Earth because God desired to have companionship. God desires a relationship with each and every person.
It isn't difficult to understand why family members desire to have close relationships with one another. The same principle applies to God. He is our father, creator, savior, and many other things. From the beginning God has wanted a close and personal relationship with each person.
The Bible shows us this by the phrasing used when it describes people like David as "a man after God's own heart." The judges and kings in the Bible sometimes only have short paragraphs about their accomplishments. The main statements are about whether they followed God or were evil.
God did not create puppets, nor does he want us to be clones and identical to one another. He did give us free will and individual personalities. What he does want is for us to choose to follow him and have a relationship to him.
This is not impossible. God really only gives us two rules that we need to follow - Love God and Love One Another. All the other guidelines in the Bible are wrapped up in each of these. So when we treat others well then we show them love and by doing so we show love for God. When we do that we grow stronger and closer in our relationship with Him.
The problem then is really how is love defined. There are a lot of definitions people across the ages have come up with to define love in all its aspects. God defines love in great detail in I Corintians 13. Read that chapter and begin to apply those attributes to your own character and you will begin to understand what I know about a close relationship with God. You will also understand why we are here, to love God in every way with every part of us.

Hello:
I don’t know why I stumbled across your question, but at 59 years old and asking that question for many years, I believe this is our reason for existence and our purpose. Please look up the works of a Saint Augustine of Hippo. He studied a lot of books asking the same question. I remembered this quote of his and was able to find it again at
http://encarta.msn.com/related_761576576_7.2/Christianity_Thou_hast_created_us_for.html
Saint Augustine once prayed: "Thou hast created us for Thyself and our hearts are restless until they find their rest in Thee."
Also these 3 verses from the Bible, Old Testament
Deuteronomy 6:5 (New International Version)
5 Love the LORD your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your strength.
and from the New Testament
Matthew 22: 36"Teacher, which is the greatest commandment in the Law?" 37 Jesus replied: " 'Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind.' 38 This is the first and greatest commandment. 39And the second is like it: 'Love your neighbor as yourself.'
and my favorite
Jeremiah 29: 11 For I know the plans I have for you," declares the LORD, "plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. 12 Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. 13 You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Would be happy to discuss this with you.

You weren't put here for any reason. You just happened just like everyone and everything else. It is just a coincidence that each of us is who we are. That's the irony of it. There is no reason for our existence and most of us will wonder why we are here for most of our lives then die, cease to exist in any form other than a decaying body and never know that we wasted a lot of time wondering why we were put here.

i feel we where not put here, but created. for what ever means it seems to be to reproduce. when doing this you get a personality our what other will heckle our they feed off others ways. you then get followers. just like in today's times people keeping up with trends. again and again you see people doing what ever it takes to be with some-one. my view is some one saw this as a way of making money. to have someone to believe and build and they will come is no different then finding a regular customer for you new found business. but just remember its your own view and their is no wrong answer because you just might be a microscopic piece inside of somebody because you never see the outside of the universe.
