America is supposed to be a leading country today. Yet on producing scientists we rank world-wide number 25? How come we're a rich country yet an average American is stupid. How is that we're supposed to be a "melting pot" yet racist still lives on strongly. Immigrants come here hoping for a better life, some were told in America the streets are paved with gold, yet when they come they work long hours for minor wage.
Is America really that great? Now don't get me wrong I live in NYC, and I'm happy here but I'm just saying...

I'm not saying we're stupid, I think if America is supposed to be so great and smart shouldn't we rank higher than 25? And I think Poland beat us. And my father was told America's streets are paved with gold.

I don't know, I watched Sicko and I'm thinking of moving to England for free health care. We don't even take care of sick people!
But we sure take care of the illegal aliens with WIC and health care.
Most Americans are stupid because no one pushes children to do their best.

So, if we're not scientists, we're stupid?
Racists live everywhere, hon. It's sad, but true.
The "streets made of gold" thing was told to immigrants over a hundred years ago. I don't think they're told that anymore.
Immigrants may come here hoping for a better life, but "here" refers to a place that is set up for the citizens of "here." SO, in order to have a better life "here," the immigrants must be willing to go through the process of becoming a citizen.
America is not some tropical paradise randomly set on the planet. The land has been worked, mistakes have been made and learned from, laws have been created from the lessons learned.
In order to partake of the "better life," one must become a citizen. My grandfather immigrated here from Lithuania and he became a legal citizen. His brothers also immigrated here, and they, too, became citizens. My grandmother's mother (who died when I was 15) immigrated here from Poland. She, too, became a legal citizen.
All the immigrants in my family worked hard and were dirt poor while here. My father was the one who finally was able to lift them out of poverty.
That is the story for all who come here. Come. Become legal. Work hard. Everyone has the chance for a better life, but it's gonna cost some sweat.
We Americans don't define ourselves as a "leading country." That is an epithet applied to us by other countries. We're just living in liberty and pursuing happiness.
**EDIT** And your father actually believed that?? Come on!! I don't think my grandfather believed it in the 1920's.

America has its perks. But still... it has somethings I don't like about it. And you're right. My parents are immigrants and they had a rough time here, fleeing from their past in Mexico. Hardly got any work. They also treat Mexicans badly here sometimes. I'm 13 and I'm probably not going to live somewhere else when I'm an adult. I hate the politics here too.

we are busy making sure the immigrants get free health care so they can get healthy and return to their own country, we learn their languages so they don't have to learn English, we even change things around so even those who are here illegally can get more than what Americans who were born here get... we're too busy doing all this, who has time and resources left to take care of our own!
