No matter how geeky this might sound. Invest in stocks, because in your further years you will be richer than if you left it in a savings bond. Make right choices on stocks. The best way to learn stocks is playing the virtual stock exchange game.

Why is that a problem? And what's the necessity of spending it? Your friend could save it for sometime later when he/she really needs it.

Are they in school? Supplies for school.
Do they have a special occasion coming upi? Things needed for it.
Do they like the theater, amusement parks, dinner cruises? Go have fun for a night.
Feeling charitable? Donate it to a good cause?

Open an ING Direct.com, on-line savings account. Your friend would get more interest in a year than the local bank.
