Learn who has the most power and then avoid pissing them off. If I had known that, I would not have been fired from my last job.

There is no right or wrong. There are only those with power and those without power. Those with power are always "right".

I'm going to cover some of the basics.

* show up on time (15 minutes early is better)
* do the job that you're paid to do for the time you're paid to do it
* don't misappropriate company resources (surfing the web for personal stuff, taking home office supplies, personal phone calls on company time, etc)
* never, ever send out your resume or surf for a new job while at work (even if you're off the clock...I know someone who got fired for doing this)
* be courteous and respectful to all you come into contact with (managers, subordinates, customers, peers, etc.)
* be organized in your work
* pay attention to the details
* be willing to stay late if needed

Ok, so there are some of the basics. There are probably more but I can't think of them off the top of my head.

That's basic.

You want to do more than just not get fired?

Seek more responsibility.

Ask questions.

Volunteer for tough assignments.

Get trained in areas other than the one you are paid to be good at.

Get formal education in your area.

Arrive on time...the biggest reason for losing a job is "lateness"...(sometimes it is reasonable to be late such as an accident..or the traffic was backed up...but they can call or bring it up on the internet)...other reasons...to avoid getting fired is to do your job to the best of your ability...even if someone is jealous of you and tells the boss something FALSE...he will notice that it is YOU THAT IS WORKING NOT HER...get it??? hope i have helped...

Yes. You can be asked "why" you left a prior position, and it is easier to make up an excuse for taking a job with less pay than to admit you were fired.
