Totally dependent on the person. I've read articles alluding to the US becoming more cat friendly, and I've read just as many saying that dogs are still tops. I don't think it will ever finally be decided.
Both have their strong points and weak points. Cats are beautiful, graceful and small enough to have in an apartment, but they're also aloof and can be (pardon the term) downright bitchy. Dogs are loyal and affectionate but they also dig, jump, bark, etc. and that's not even getting into the personal hygene of either one.
I know a good number of "dog lovers" who have turned into "cat lovers" over the years though, and I think it's as much the personality of the owner as it is the pet. Both have pros and cons that make them excellent companions for some, and bad choices for others. Until we can figure out some wild hybrid that has all the good points and none of the bad I don't think the argument will ever die.

I can't speak for all Americans, but I definitely prefer cats over dogs. I like dogs just fine as long as they belong to someone else. Too high maintenance for me, with the walking and the picking up droppings. Also, the barking can get annoying. Cats are very clean quiet animals and only require a litter box, which to me is preferable to the routine mentioned above. They are fun to play with and snuggle with. Dogs can be trained to hunt, lead the blind and sniff for drugs. Cats can't be bothered with stuff like that, but I only want their companionship and mine are tops at that. Mine is nearly always either on my lap, or sleeping in a basket near my feet. To sum up, each can fill a void in our lives and it is up to the owners to decide whether a dog or a cat is the right pet for them. I firmly believe everyone should have a pet.

Like an independent pet...choose cats.
Want one that will regularly give you the affection you crave--choose a dog.
I have yet to have my cat jump into my lap and lick my face when I'm feeling low .

nicely you in no way suggested how previous the domestic dog become, yet you need to stop him chasing the cat, and the cat will settle for him if he won't hassle her... you need to no longer pass away them on my own at the same time on the 2d, yet continuously supervise, as quickly because of the fact the canines turns that is interest to the cat questioning approximately chasing her, try diverting that is interest, play a recreation with him... you need to teach him to no longer chase because of the fact it is going to in no way end otherwise, it is going to purely worsen... canines get exhilaration from chasing for him it us needless to say a recreation however the cat doesnt like it and is nerve-racking so once you won't be able to supervise save them aside. because of the fact the canines grows and calms down and the cat starts to chill out extra and stop working, they gets person to a minimum of one yet another, and in spite of in the event that they do no longer become suitable acquaintances they'll appreciate one yet another. Edit: "I do tell the canines, "stop it!" and each so often i visit spray him with water if he gets too out of hand." nicely how do you anticipate the canines being keen on the cat while purely undesirable issues happen to him round her, no rely if that is not her hissing at him then you definately spraying him with a bottle... he buddies the cat with damaging thoughts... there is no longer lots use to tell the canines to "stop it" while the canines would not comprehend the which ability, it is like if I gave you a command in yet another language which you in no way heard, after which once you do no longer obey I spray you with a bottle......... what might you're making out of that? once you won't be able to pay finished interest to them, save them separate, and once you're cutting-edge, you ought to confirm that the two have an excellent adventure, play with the doggy, reward him for stable habit and examine out to ignore with regard to the undesirable....... particularly divert his interest and while he's "stable" reward... additionally, supply a super style of workout to the doggy to tire him out then he will me much less in all probability interior the will of chasing the cat... coach your canines the "pass away" command, "moof" above has provided some stable hyperlinks approximately the thank you to do it...
