I told someone who was still in the closet that I liked them and they rejected me, but looked at me with sad eyes afterwards for a long time, but never said anything to me. What happened here?

Don't listen to the human trash who posted first. I think this is just a normal rejection. You can't really know that he's/she's gay unless he/she tells you. So I would just talk to them if you really are hurting. But other then that, you have to respect their choice. If they truly aren't for you, remember: When one door closes, another one opens.

If they are gay (if they are in the closet, then I'd imagine that you are just assuming this), perhaps they felt the same way and the emotions of not feeling able to respond in kind were brewing up to the surface. That's sad :(

Anyway, either they like you as well but don't want/can't act on it. Or they're sad that they rejected you but aren't interested.

Assuming both of you are gay, the person in the closet obviously wasn't interested, but maybe felt bad about it. Or he/she was just having a bad day.

Maybe he is still not comfortable with his sexuality. He probably wants to go out with he but is scared. Try to make him feel comfortable.
