The best way it to go to a car wash. Going to a car wash means you won't have a driveway full of grease, oil and dirt. Plus a car wash has the advantage of hot water and a pressure washer as well as a selection for cleaning engine compartments/components....

Don't forget to cover (depending on make and year) things that don't react good to water like distributors, carburetors, electronics.... with plastic pags held in place with rubber bands. Don't spray these areas with the high pressure hose or you will have problems.

I would also 'Pre-Soak" the engine compartment before hosing it down. Make sure to use a solvent (non-flammable) to remove baked on grease and oil. Pre soaking could be omitted if the engine compartment isn't caked with oil and grease.

Hope this helps...

Steam Cleaning is the best method of cleaning an engine bay, second best is let the car warm up for 5 minutes and using a chemical degreaser (like purple power, super clean, aeresol engine degreaser will work in a pinch etc) applied with a sprayer (like a 2 gallon weed sprayer) clean the engine, let it sit for three minutes and use a pressure washer to clean the engine bay., be careful around plastic parts and hoses. Most do it yourself car washes have an engine and tire cleaner setting, take your time, disconnect your battery or put a plastic bag over your Alternator. Then use the wash setting, for stubborn grease repeat the steps above.

Take some change with you, to the local high pressure wand type car wash and forget all the canned engine degreasers.
High pressure soap followed by a clean rince is all that's needed to completely make your underhood a show piece.
Do not fear ignition wires, sparkplugs coil packs, distributors batteries or radiators.
Try not to wet down the filthy underhood noise and heat insulation becasue as soon as you slam the hood down the crap settles back on your clean motor.

I use an aerosol can of engine cleaner if it's real greasy. Then rinse thoroughly. Follow the directions on the can. Or you could take it to the car wash and spray it.
