There are a number of reasons for the poor knowledge of the world by US citizens.
Firstly -- The news media is primarily US centred or about US related stories with very little about the other countries in the world. The news media has also been a willing collaborator in misleading the American people about world events and the way the US has interfered in them.
Secondly -- The film industry in the US concentrates primarily upon US related stories, and when it covers stories of an international issue, i.e. wars, it does so from a US perspective and says very little, or nothing, about the other nations involved. It also produces the story that is strongly biased in favour of the US, even when technically the US was at fault.
Thirdly -- The education system in the US is US centred and teaches little about international events, politics or history.
Fourthly -- And probably the most important reason, the US people have a tradition of being "Isolationist", although the US government has been the opposite since 1945, interfering in the politics, economies and affairs of many countries around the world.

We can live our lives in relative ignorance, so we do.
An interesting question though. It insinuates that Americans are much more uninformed the the rest of the world. I would like to see some numbers on this.

I agree with Walter B. regarding the role of the US media. Google any major newspaper in the world and you'll see the difference in coverage, analysis, scope.
