I have been sad continously for a few weeks now. Being sad has increased since school started. This isn't a new school. I have many reasons for being sad, but this is really weird for me. I've cried more than I have in a day than I've ever cried in a year. I will continusly just cry. And I can't seem to stop. My mother refuses to let me take medication to help me not be depressed. She and my family thinks that I need to get over everthing without medication although my mother is a nurse. She doesn't understand and won't listen to me. When it ry to explain. I don't even want to talk to her anymore becuase whenever we do we end up fighting. I have no one to talk to and I'm tired of being sad. I'd rather just die although I won't try suicide or cutting because I see no point in cutting and I see many good points in suicide but I want to go to college and highschool and act. I have so many things I want to do so I won't try suicide. I just want to be happy though.

Just try to pretend your happy and then before you know it you'll be happy. I know that sounds stupid, but it does work. I'm sorry that you're so sad, try to do something that's fun and makes you happy.

Well there have been studies that show adolescents that take some anti-depressants get worse and not better. They do commit suicide and not because they were suicidal to begin with but because the medicine they are on effects the brain somehow differently than in older people. I think you should try and think about what you might be upset over. What is there in your life that is making you feel so depressed. Is it family, a boyfriend, what? once you kinda figure out what it is talk it over with your dad or mom or whoever you feel the most comfortable with. The next time you go to your doctor tell them how you are feeling and they may be able to help you. Perhaps you could get some counseling, that will not be like taking medicine for it and you might just feel better by talking to someone about how you feel. Ask your mom if she would let you at least talk to a physiologist or therapist. I hope you get to feeling better soon, it is no fun being down all the time. I know kinda how you feel. Try to smile a little more and act a little happy that may help some. :)

Yes, it does sound like clinical depression, and medication would be one possible way to address it. Your mom has your best interest at heart. Maybe the lesson here is to learn to take care of yourself, rather than relying on a pill. There are other alternatives. You mention that you don't have anyone to talk to. A good therapist, one who is NOT a PhD and can not prescribe medication, might be a good compromise. He or she would listen and make suggestions but not medicate. In addition, there are nutritional approaches to depression, and exercise helps with depression. I suggest a trip to the book store or some research on the Internet for some nutritional approaches. Depending on your symptoms, omega 3 oils, b vitamins, balancing protein and carbs, and exercise can all be helpful. Check out "The Edge Effect" by Eric R. Braverman or "Healing with Whole foods" by Paul Pitchford. Try going for a walk when you feel sad.

I am so sorry that you are going through this difficult time. I am also sorry that although your mother is a nurse, that she doesn't understand what you are going through.

I am also a nurse and I used to work as a RN on psychiatric units for 20 years. Just because a person is a nurse doesn't mean that they understand mental health.

If you are crying allot and are having thoughts of suicide, then you have the illness, Major Depression, and you need antidepressant medication to get better. You also need to see a counselor to help you think through all the things that you have reason to feel sad about.

Crying for no reason and having thoughts of suicide is not being sad. It is being Depressed. I agree with the person who told you to see your school counselor and tell them that you have been thinking of suicide and to tell your family doctor the same thing.

The people that said that they took antidepressant medication and that it made them feel worse are ignorant. What they experienced were side effects from the medication. Any and every medication has the potential for side effects but that doesn't mean that you will get them.

Your doctor will have a good idea of what may be the best antidepressant for you at the beginning but our bodies are all different and no one can tell for sure before you try the medication. That is why they start you on the lowest dose, so that if you have a side effect, the side effect will have the smallest effect on you.

Sometimes, the first antidepressant the doctor tries may not be the best one for you and you may need to try another one. The process is worth it. My doctor had to try a number of antidepressants before he found the best ones for me. I can not tell you how much better I feel now!

One thing for you to know is that you can e-mail me anytime you ever want to talk to anyone. Your parents can e-mail me also, if they want to.

What I'm going to say next is for your mother. It is, of course, necessary for all of us to learn how to deal with our emotions and our life without running to the pill bottle as the first resort. If your daughter is crying all the time for no reason and is having frequent thoughts of suicide, the serotonin levels in her brain are too low and possibly her norepinephrine levels also.

Major depression is a physical disease that effects our emotions and our thinking. Your daughter is in trouble right now and needs your help. I don't know what your relationship with your daughter is and it's none of my business but I assure you that if you make an appointment for her with a board certified adolescent psychiatrist that he/she is not going to suggest an antipressant for your daughter unless she needs one.

I don't know if you are a Christian or not and that is none of my business either. I just mention it because I know that many Bible believing Christians (I am one) are against going to secular counselors because they will try to teach you or your child, ideas that are not Christian.

There are Christian counselors that are Ph.D psychologists and maybe your pastor can direct you to one if that is a concern.

My best wishes for you and your family.

I totally understand how you feel and so many others would too so don't feel like you're weird or different. Hopefully you have someone you can talk to about it and you will probably find that there are lots of others going through the same thing. Taking medication is not the first thing to do if you are depressed so i can see where your mum is coming from but try to make her see that you need some sort of help and that you are not going to just 'get over it'.
Good luck and i hope you don't feel sad for too much longer.

You said you have many reasons for being sad...what are they? Actually crying can be beneficial to your body...not in such excess though! Medication is not always the answer, and can sometimes be more harmful than beneficial. Your mom does understand more than you know, and is trying to help you in the best way she knows how. She is probably just as frustrated as you are seeing you in this condition, and not knowing what to do to help. There are NO good points in suicide!!! Please, find someone, anyone, you feel comfortable enough with that you can talk to and get some help for yourself. There IS someone there, maybe you just aren't looking in the right places. A journal can be very helpful in getting some bad thoughts out of you...I don't know why it works, but it does...if you put it in print it makes it not be such an issue to you. It is easier to get past it if you write it down. You have your whole life ahead of you and still have your dreams of going to college and acting. Don't give up on yourself...you can make it out of this ok...love to you...

I think your mother is right to not want to medicate you for depression. Those medications have serious side effects, and set the stage for you to turn to various drugs in order to avoid dealing with unpleasant emotions.

I would suggest you make sure you get enough sleep. Most people in the US - teens, especially - do not get enough sleep. I make sure my teen kids get MORE than 8 hours of sleep a night. My teenaged daughter requires at least 9 - and every so often she'll sleep for 12 hours! She just needs that much sleep.

Make sure you get GOOD food. Most people, especially teens, do not get enough GOOD food. Read "The Sugar Blues". It's a great book about diet and most of us get way too much sugar and refined foods and that WILL cause depression.

Do you have a minister you can talk to? There may be something that is really bothering you that you are afraid to talk to your mom about - in that case, I would find a minister you can trust. That could really help you to feel relief.

I've gone through this too- its normal for your age. Get your parents or friends to take you shopping, or to eat for dinner, do something really fun. If you enjoy reading read your facorite book, stay up on a Saturday night to watch a movie with your Mom, eat some popcorn. Talk to your mom and/or if you have a sister about what you're feeling. I know it hurts, but it WILL get better. After your first big deppression it will never stop. You have phases of it, sort of but it never lasts more than about a m onth or a month and a half, depending on you.
I won't tell you to cheer up, because I know it's impossible to make yourself happy in times like this. It's aggravating because everything may be right but you have that hurt in your stomach and the depression feels like it won't go away. IT will, try to keep your chin up
Good luck

You can buy Saint Johns Wort over the counter. It is an herbal medicene for what ails you. I took it myself once and not even the recommended dose. I had the blues. After three days of the stuff felt good. I don't really even think much of hebal medicene but a friend recommended it.

Your mom probably knows that many anti-depressants can have bad side effects and is afraid for you. Maybe she will agree to let you try Saint Johns Wort.

You know depression passes and can be treated so hang in there. Good times are coming.

First of all I'm so sorry your sad :( Medications are not the anwser they made me worse much worse. Don't kill yourself believe me that is not an option. You are probably going through a period where your hormones are changeing or maybe you really need to go in a quiet place and (dig through your mind) to think of little things that might have triggered this and you did'nt even know it. And here is the best anwser maybe this is God calling you into relationship with him find a local church with a good youth group or if you have a christian friend that has been talking to you reach out to her . Good luck honey i hope you feel better soon.

Try exercising. It increases your endorphins and gets your blood flow going. It also gives you some quiet meditation time by yourself. When you are in your teen years, i would say anti-depressant medication is not the option. It can do more harm then good. Try talking to a counselor or psychologist. Sometimes just having someone listen to you speak your mind or talk about your problems without judgement can be a big help.
