High costs for small places. Salaries don't increase at the same rate needed to live in a City. Are we all destined for long commutes?

Supply and demand. There are more folks buying than folks selling. So the price goes up.

I just watched one of those house flipping shows and wonder how the hell anyone in California can afford to buy a house -- $500K for a tiny one bedroom condo?
