It's quite different from normal conservatism and I hate how it misued. Originally Neo-Conservatives had learn the ideology at university thats why its so different. Read up about it and stop calling every Con you meet a neo-con. You make other people who are left of centre (like me) look dumb.

Yes, there is an ideological difference -- between neo-conservatives who like big govt as a means of advancing their conservative social agenda -- and other conservatives who don't want a big federal govt.

Not all conservatives are neo-conservatives, and many neo-conservatives are so focused on the "how" of achieving their goals that they occasionally lose sight of the "why" inherent in the conservative mindset.

All the more reason to be precise in identifying who we are talking about, and to avoid unnecessary generalizations.

in case you have been in the least knowledgeable you're able to understand that the political spectrum is left, perfect, top (libertarian) and backside (authoritarian). you're a neo-con. that would make you not an self sustaining and not a libertarian. The "a techniques-left" liberals properly consult with the Bush administration as neo-cons, with the aid of fact, shockingly adequate, he's a neo-con. So if any liberals call you a neo-con, they're the two the superb option or as erroneous as you.

Does anyone expect many people to engage in intelligent political discourse? The United States is the only country in the world where people on the left are called liberals and people on the right are automatically called conservatives.

In regards to neo-conservatism, the word is thrown around too much that its useless. Beyond it being thrown around too much, it has a different meaning in many nations. A neo-conservative in Canada is not the same as a neo-conservative in the USA or Asia or wherever.

Some of them do not know the difference and thus follow their marching orders. Others know the difference and intentionally misuse it because of the stigma attached to the term neo-con so by using it they are working to silence the opposition with hate labels. Bad stuff either way. A little honest debate would be way cooler.

The term Neo-Conservative has become very warped. I myself consider myself a very moderate Republican but i do have neo con beleifs. Since time has changed ideas change. Neo conseratives once saw Communism as a threat (I still do) now it is Islamic Fascism. The Neo con Movement has also become very Supportive of the Bush administration because of his agressiveness towards Terrorists (Islamic Fascists). Not all Neo cons support Bush but i am afraid that many do.

This is my take on it. The Democrats are supposed to be the Liberals, the Republicans are supposed to be the Conservatives, & never the twain shall meet! So a neo con would be a new conservative, meaning a new way of thinking conservative, right? The Democrats are all liberal thinking, so that must mean that they think just about anything that helps the middle or poor class is fine with them, right? I just wish you people would not try to sound so intelligent by not just saying who you are addressing in your questions instead of labeling people as a form of sarcasm!

I don't think it makes sense to expect the general population to know, understand, and care about the differences between conservatives and neo-conservatives.

Besides, the definition of "Neo-con" and Conservative isn't necessarily set in stone. The meaning of the word will change, at least in common English.

Like it or not we are stuck in a psychological dilemma fueled by the collision of two toxic groups—groups with deadly shadows created by literalized Christian monotheism and literalized Islamic monotheism—both fundamentalist, both virulent strains of group-think, both after mental territory, economic and political power. When one group’s god is the only god, all other gods must be inferior. When one group’s political view is the only view, all other political systems must be inferior. Consequently, intolerance is one of the chief characteristics of the fundamentalist political shadow. In this manner monotheistic religions, like a contagious disease, spread violence and immoral behaviors. The fact that fundamentalist cults, whether Christian, Islamic, or any other denomination are able to recruit and brainwash legions of followers illustrates a confounding global illiteracy about rudimentary group dynamics.

EDIT:
Ryan neoconservative is uniquely American, google Leo Strauss

EDIT :Mr. Bad Day, While the views may vary , those outlined by the "project for a new American century " probably come closet to fulfilling that role.

Well... that is a point... to a degree... but there are common usage issues... in other words... I think the word's definition has basically changed, for all intense purposes... definitions only really extend to how people use the words...

and of course, it's everywhere... have you seen how the right misuses the word liberal? it's comical...

extreme people say extreme things... which usually make them look like extreme fools... on both sides...

I'm not sure much can be done about it...

I'm wondering why the term came into use at all. Once the Bushes were solidly in the group called the liberal wing of the Republican party, or the Rockefeller wing, if you prefer, and that worked quite well. Of course, in those days, one couldn't be both liberal and intolerant at the same time!
