European notions of land ownership were unknown by the aboriginal people. They didn't build fences and patrol borders. So the "settlers" figured nobody owned it and moved in. And at first the natives really didn't mind, there was lots of land and resources for everyone. But they didn't understand the European "it's mine now, piss off" mentality. So they continued to hunt and roam freely as before. Eventually this clash of an open society and a territorial one led to violence.
