No, they are not easier. Cello, bass, and violin are quite different than each other, and there are easier and harder things about each one. However, if you talk to someone who's switched instruments and said the one that they switched to was "easier", this is probably why:
Either the second instrument was one that clicked for them, they have a better teacher for the second instrument. ALSO, once you learn one string instrument, it will be easier to learn a second. Not EASY, just easier!

So the answer to your question is NO. If you like the violin, stick with it! Learning a string instrument is NOT easy, nor is it easy to make it sound good! Find a good private lessons teacher.

However, you could try playing cello or bass and see if it clicks for you. Maybe you're more of a cello person or bass person!

You might consider taking up piano as well. It is NOT easy to play piano well, but it's an instrument that's less frustrating when you are first starting out (if you have a good teacher.)

Good luck!

Hey there, I play the cello, so obviously I am going to say cello. To me the only easier thing about the cello is that the hand positions are much more natural than a violinists hand positions. To play the cello the left hand does not need to be torked, it can remain in its natural position to play the strings. Violinists would tell you that it does not bother them to tork the hand, but I believe that would be because they are used to that position. To me, it hurts a lot to turn the wrist. I don't think you should play viola because it is the same story as the violin. Yes, both are very beautiful instruments, and either one would be a great choice to learn. As in terms of reading notes and playing the cello is no easier than the violin or viola. But I just wanted to tell you that the hand position to play is much more natural. And you can sit while you perform, thats a bonus! I wish you the best of luck!

See... I studied violin first, I played it over a year. Then I realized that I love the strings sound, but I can't bear violin's high pitch produced so close of my ear.... then switched to cello.

I must warn you: cello is not a bit easier than violin, nor it is more difficult. It's just different.

Cello is not an oversized violin. Cello technique is rather different.

Comparing both I find that in cello is very easy and natural the left hand's technique. The left arm and hand just fall naturally. i don't need to twist my left wrist nor forearm in any way. Actually, cello students can manage to learn vibrato quite soon... I did it in my first year playing cello. But... right hand... the bow hand is way more difficult. To play cello one needs to learn how to apply right weight, strenght and pressure to produce nice tone.

I concluded that violin was the other way. Left hand difficult, right hand easy.

Bass??? gee... I had a bass once or twice in my hands. Never managed to press a string properly to produce any sound.

hehehe, just kidding.

The thing is that bass can discourage you quite soon.

Once I had the chance to watch some bass students from our local music school. The first one was in is final (8th!) year at school... He is even leader of the bass section in our local youth orchestra... well well, this guy played an etude and a sonata (arranged for bass, can't remember which was) quite smooth. But after him we had a couple of first year students... They tried and struggled... but they couldn't (yet) produce a half decent tone.

in the other hand I watched a few first year's cello exams... they could play simple tunes, but achieveng a decent tone.

So... I may regret to say this... I can't find a nicer way to say it... but if you are easily discouraged because an instrument is "too hard"... I'm sorry. Bowed strings are not for you. Buy a guitar.

Yep. I allow you to hate me.

Greetings!!!

oh my NO...... you would be better off going to viola fewer differences and easier parts

I've been playing cello for some 46 years and love it ... but unlike my esteemed colleagues I love all 3 instruments just took up the violin and viola in January and the hardest transition from violin to viola is that clef

Bass is a wonderful instrument, being able to fit into everything from an orchestra to a jazz band, to a rock group to raggae.
