The condensation on the glass will permeate into the wood and leave a white ring in the table. If the table is finished with varnish, the ring will be trapped under the varnish for years.

The condensation from the glass could damage the top of the table. Also if you use a coaster you won't leave a mark from the glass. Ask Daddy.

^ Daddy's right. If the glass is wet you can get a water ring or water mark on the wood or the glass can scratch the table.

I'm curious why you didn't ask him. Is this a joke? You use a coaster because water ruins the wood finish and you'll have repair work to do.

Well how many ways do you want to have water rings on your wood? Who doesn't know that wood absorbs water and so does certain stones like marble? Once they are in it's not easy to get them out without sanding and restaining or resurfacing. Come on.

First you might spill some liquid.
Second, condensation forms on cold glasses.
Third, moisture soaks into wood & damages it.
